The grizzly bear that held the record for years as the largest ever shot was taken with a single shot .22. The 12 y/o (IIRC) Eskimo girl that took it wasn't bear hunting when she did it. She and her brother were out and about when the bear took an interest in them. They climbed a stack of brush hoping the bear would go away or couldn't get to them, but it climbed the pile. She put a .22 in it's ear. When I was there, that bear was still on display at Anchorage International.
