I'd say to start with the CMP. I didn't really know what to look for and I got burned on my first one at a gun show.
Garand's are very interesting and fantastic weapons. Good luck in your search for a good one.
Ditto on the CMP. However be aware that they've been hit like every other gun seller in recent times and they are running behind on shipping and availability. It's not that they're running low on rifles, but they have to inspect and recondition the rifles they have to get them ready to sell, and that's where they're running behind due to demand. Here's a link to their site. Civilian Marksmanship Program
You do have to meet certain requirements in order to buy from them, but they're no big deal and well worth the effort!
cmp looks great, but my father-in-law has a couple he is wanting to sell. trying to find out the condition and what to look for so i can give him a fair price for them. i am just looking for a shooter, but i do not want to cheat him out of anything.
