So I left driving a bus because my best friend from high school is the VP of a small technology place in town. He has been asking me for about the past 2 years to go full time there. I finally decided early this year I would. Fast forward to today where at least 5 of us from our department found out January 1st we are no longer employed.

I know my friend/VP did not want to do this, but it's hard not to be somewhat upset at the same time.

At least they let us go home early and stay on the clock until our scheduled time off.

I would be angry. He should find another area to transfer you to since you left what I assume is a secure job to work for him. Good luck.

Vice President + small = regular working guy

Don't be upset with him, because if he is a friend I'm sure you realize he was sincerely offering you an opportunity.

Chances are it wasn't his decision, just following orders from higher up. Education field probably wasn't your best bet.

Makes for a rotten day. Hope something better comes your way.

Happened to me a few years back. Plant manager asked me to assume responsibility for a new group. Three months later it was pink slips for the whole group. But in the end I am better off.

Best of luck to you. It obviously wasn't an easy decision for the company to make and it's apparently not personal but it's still hard not to be upset about the whole circumstance. It sounds like they gave you good notice to start looking elsewhere, something many companies don't do anymore.

    Obamacare fallout?
Medicare cutbacks, we have got 3/4 million a year more in sales with new customers but lost 1/2 million in sales/service of old customers.

Looks like they are getting out of desktop support altogether and focusing on network/server stuff only. They have been good with giving notices and trying to help find you other jobs.

I also heard billing and practice management took a huge hit as well.

Hate to hear that. We lost 5 people this week and that was out of a very small group of people(less than 30). And it's not over yet. There are more terminations coming. I'm probably not far from the RIF radar either.

At least you got a couple months to start looking. They escorted one guy to the door the minute they told him he was done. Couldn't even say goodbye to the people he had worked with for the last 2+ years.

Don't believe anyone who says our economy is robust. It is very fragile.

Especially working in the healthcare industry, whether it is on the clinical side or the support side. It is not a pretty picture and my sympathies go out to everyone losing their jobs in this "new" economy.

Good luck. It's never easy to make changes, but it's the only constant in life. I hope you find something that you really enjoy so you can make a living without feeling like it's work.
