We have 357/38spl for self defense and 44 magnum for medium/large game. What niche was the 41magnum serving besides oddball caliber placeholder?

I'm sure many have said that for a couple decades now... The .41 mag does have it's loyal fans that I highly suspect will keep it alive. It enjoys more popularity in the reloading community... You really need to load it yourself to see just how great a cartridge it is.

If I found the right Redhawk at a decent price, I'd do my part keeping it alive. :D

IMO, the 10mm in an auto loader didn't help the revolver cartridge... Also, it never helped itself, like the .44 mag, by offering a large selection of different bullet weights...

The 44 mag is a .429 diameter & the 41 mag is a .410 diameter not much of a difference, but the 44 has heavier bullets but more kick

10mm is kinda a revival for the .41mag, being the semi-auto version. Looked into .41mag a couple of years ago, only a couple of bullet weights and types. The other calibers offered many choices.

My very first carry gun was a 4" Nickel mod 57. .41 is a fine cartridge, but like so many other cartridges filled a niche that may not have needed filling. Shoot .44 special or load down the .44 mag for personal defense. Or for hunting, heavier bullets and higher velocities can be had. Limited choices of bullet weights are what drove me away from the .41. However, if you own one there's no reason to chuck it and buy a .44 mag!

I reload so I have always been on the lookout for a 41mag. I just haven't found one that I wanted to pounce on, rarely see one.

The 10mm is nowhere near a full power 41 mag. The ONLY reason people think the 10mm is close is because of Winchesters 175grnST 41 (lite).

A 41 mag can push a 230grn Keith at 1450fps thats 1075 ft lbs, pretty darn potent, and waaaay more than a 10mm can do.

I don't think the 41 is gonna die, it just kinda maintains.

The .357 max, or super mag, "died" years ago and yet Remington is still making brass for it and ammo is being offered by some of the smaller ammo makers like Grizzly. I think the .41 mag has a better chance of survival than the .357 max. Usually.41 brass is still the same price as .44 brass, that alone is a reason for optimism.:)

So just when is a caliber "dead"?
Is it when new firearms are no longer made?
Or, is it when factory ammunition is no longer available?
By either measure the .41 Mag is alive and well.
Smith, Taurus & Ruger all make guns, and there's better than 20 listings for factory ammo on Midway.com. It might not be the most popular caliber out there, but it's a long way from dead.

I am new to the web Paige . I would like to get a41mag. Just cause I don't have one .
The one with the most guns wins right?
I think it would be a good addition to my
Collection . My 44 is a bit much for my young ones
That might b a good cal. For them to shoot .
What is the recoil out of a 6" barrel in a hunting load
In comparrison to a 44 mag?

If you own a .41 may and worry about ammo going extinct it might be time to start reloading.
