minute of angel, usually based on 100 yard (200, 300, 400,) range for grouping of shots

Example would be a "1 MOA group at 1000 yards" would be very, very, very good shooting. That would mean a "group" of 3 (sometimes 5) shots are ALL within and inch of each other at a target 1000 yards away. do that, you get your name on something and medals.

Example B would be say "1" at 100 yards" that is a super common group or standard for a AR15 rifle right out of the box, nothing special

"That's 5 shots out of my 700 in .308 at 1,000 yards. That group, including the one flier measures 5", or 1/2 MOA at 1,000 yards.
That 5" group above was shot with 168 grain A-max bullets." -Dave Doehrman

Just curious, what was your length of barrel and twist rate for these shots?

Factory 26" heavy barrel with a 1:12 twist. The bolt and barrel are factory and I have just over 4,000 rounds through the weapon. It took a couple years and about 3,000 rounds to get those types of groups. I can't shoot that size group every time, but if conditions are good, so are the groups. Working up a good load for your particular weapon is the key to accuracy.

Uhh... 1 moa at 1000 yards, would be 10 inches! As in, your entire group is within a 10 inch circle! (Which is still excellent shooting!)

There is a guy in Texas that has the record for the longest bulls eye shot with a 223. It was at over 1000 yards. He used a Thompson Contender single shot with a bull barrel and I don't know what scope he used but in the picture it was big one.

Some one in an early post said that the 30-06 was a military round, so is the 308. It came after the 30-06.

The military wanted a lighter round that would do the same thing as the older round. It had to bust a military helmet at 500 yards with standard rounds.

The 308 runs about 150 FPS slower than the 30-06 with heavy bullets that are needed for long range.

I have never shot at 1000 yards. I have shot at 500 yards. That is about the limit for me. It is great fun. I have three rifles that will work out to 500 yards. I have a Savage in 243, Remington in 308 and an Encore in 243.

I have no doubt that someone with more skill than me could use them to 1000 yards. If you want to make 1000 yard shots you are going to have to reload or have some very deep pockets for match grade ammo.

Good luck with what ever your choice is. I know it will be fun.

On an other note. If you go with the AR as some have suggested you will be spending abut $2000 or better for the rifle and you will still have to pick up a scope. Last but not least I have never heard of a bolt gun being beat by an AR. If you go with a Savage you will spend about $600 for the rifle and the same or better for the scope. Depending on what you like. I went with a Weaver 4X20 with the first focal plain. Very clear scope and easy to figure distance with. It now cost around $700.

Ugh. I wouldn't want to shoot long range with a 4x scope.

If you are looking into scopes I'd give A&A optics a call and look into their Vortex scopes. Best glass for the price.

neither is the wrong choice. Remington vs 700 has been debated more than glock vs xd vs mp. There just isnt a wrong answer. If I had to pick I would go savage, but just as many people say "If I had to pick Id go Remington"

This is my Savage 110 with Criterion 22" 1:7 223 Ackley Improved barrel and McMillan A5 stock that I built myself in my basement. Total investment in this rifle is roughly $1200 before optic.

    80gr A-Max @ 2890fps...at 1000yd that's 9.5mil drop and 2.7mil drift.

Compare with a 308 pushing a 175gr SMK at 2600fps, which has 11.8mil drop and 3.0mil drift...and you give up nothing other than bullet diameter, energy on target, and recoil.

Depends on what features you want and what your budget is.

    12FV (26" 1:9)
    10FP-SR (24" 1:9, threaded)
    11 Hog Hunter (20" 1:9)

All should shoot a 75gr Hornady HPBT or 77gr Sierra/Nosler very well. I used to have a 12FV barrel on my Savage 110 pictured above and it was a no-joke 5-shot, sub-half MOA group shooter with the 75gr HPBT and Varget.

    turnandshoot4 it isn't a 4X scope. It is a 4X20X50. At long range I use the 20 power. Up close I use the 4X. Shooting at 100 yards I use 10X.

I thought the same thing turnandshoot4 did. Your scope is called a 4-20x50 wich means its a varible from 4-20.

    4x20 means its a fixed 4x with a 20mm obj.
