Trees are living things, too. Plants Lives Matter.

No one disputes weather a tree is alive or not. For some reason some just can't apply the same to humans.

also, why are you still around here? Go find another group to annoy, we're tired

    Moving on.

What do you think would have to happen, as far as discoveries in science go, to convince one side or the other to change their views?

Or is this one of those topics, much like climate change, wherein you have a side... and no amount of evidence will ever change opinions?

If people view it as a moral issue than science will not change people's view.

One side or the other eventually dies. With any luck, the next generation is a bit more educated.

Most great scientists died before their discoveries were recognized and (mostly) universally accepted.

    Correct. That is science.

The question is.....when does consciousness begin? At the development of the first brain cell? When the brain has a certain number of cells? Is abortion before human consciousness an issue, or is it somehow worse than ending any other type of life? I don't know the answer to this stuff, just stuff to ponder.

Nothing will convince either side. Two cells come together as one and have metabolism, copy itself and grow. That is the definition of life.

Measurable brain activity is at 6 weeks. First reflexes in about 16 weeks. At 18 weeks, voluntary movements start. By 28 weeks, there is a "startle response" to noise, and the brain now has wake and sleep (including REM and dream patterns) cycles. The cerebral cortex (memory and conscious thought) doesn't really start showing much activity until AFTER birth, and continues to grow and develop for several years.

Not an answer to the question, but more information to ponder.

Beginning of that particular human's life aside.

There are so many kids in need a family already. It seems a shame to spend so much $$$ on growing a bunch more in a lab.

Part of the goal (I hope) is that the latter will eventually help the former.

Kinda odd, though, that there's an arbitrary, legal 2-week time limit on growth....

Not really arbitrary. After about 14 days, the embryo is no longer just a clump of cells. Real differentiation has started. This is also the time when implantation would occur. If the intention is to implant the embryo, than 14 days makes sense. The only reason to keep the embryo longer than that is to grow it in vitro.

Plus, then we can bring back extinct species.

    The matrix is coming...

I do often wonder how long it will take for us to figure out how to simply grow a human from cells. The debate we're currently having in this thread would be small potatoes in comparison.
