Does anyone know if Indiana requires the state police or any other agency to to be notified of the sale of a firearm to another individual? Just curious if there is a law regarding this or not.

From 1974 to 1998 Indiana law required that the transfer of all handguns be accomplished through a dealer/licensee.

There is no such current requirement after the imposition of the 1998 instant check.

Remember, state and federal laws governing transfer still apply (intoxicated state, felony status, residency, domestic violence conviction status, protective order status, inter alia).

Nope. You don't need to notify anyone. Just to be on the safe side, tho you might want to make sure, (as best you can) that they are of age and a resident of Indiana. Some folks ask for a DL and a LTCH to cover their bases.

Make sure their an Indiana resident, old enough, and not crazy, you're good. I'd write up a bill of sale with model and serial just to CYA through

Man, I wish we had a FAQ that had these common questions answered. Better yet, include it in this forum and make it a sticky! :n00b:

Although it isn't necessary, if I don't know the person (i.e. I'm selling a gun to someone at a gun show), I request to see their LTCH. Even if I know the person, I always do a bill of sale. I'm not taking any chances. CYA has always been my best policy.
