I agree about western NC, except for Asheville. What a weird, hippie place: some of the strangest idiosyncratic shops selling homemade...stuff, several 20-and 30-somethings sitting on curbs with their legs splayed out into the street, strumming tunelessly on guitars as they smoked their weed and stared vacantly into space, as we tourists from the Midwest sweltered in the 100⁰ heat. (The temperature at our rented cabin, 20 minutes and a couple of thousand feet in altitude away was in the 70s). My daughter, 13 at the time, had the best comment of the trip as she and I stepped over yet another 21st century hippie: "Hey Daddy, look. We're at the corner of Haight and Ashbury!"
