Personally I prefer using a boresnake, unless I'm planning on doing a more detailed cleaning because to use the clean out hole method you must remove receiver from the stock, and trigger group and bolt to to this.
Much easier to run the snake through unless you feel compelled to do a full cleaning each time.
I use a piece of weedwacker trimmer line. one end is melted then stuffed into an empty .22 case to mushroom out the line to hold a patch and that way it is not larger than the bore. the other end is cut to a point to poke through patches.
I shoot a ton of .22's and a swab or two with bore cleaner seems to be all that they need. I have a bore brush that I bent to stick in the chamber to clean the crud out as well.
with this you can do a quick barrel clean without having to take the gun apart as well.
