This is a little much for a simple BOB. My BOB is also my evacuation kit and INCH kit. I can't carry much of a pack because of my health so I use a game cart if I have to go on foot.

Here's the list of what I have/plan to get. (Have most of it, but not all).

I'm posting it more as a pick and choose list than one that you will want to duplicate. It doesn't include things like personal papers, deeds, insurance papers, ID, and so on that should be in a BOB.

I went to Fort Lauderdale about a year ago. I packed one bag with a weeks worth of stuff. Some of this stuff - like clothes, for example - was going to be reused. Our plan was to take a cab to the bus station and a bus to our hotel. Turns out the bus stop was a few blocks further away from our hotel than we expected...7 or 8 blocks away total.

Later in the same trip, we decided to change hotels to one about a mile down the road - we walked.

I carried this one bag with a shoulder strap around on these couple of walks and it was a HUGE pain! Way too heavy to carry around for any lengthy amount of time.

My advice for a "really good BOB" as you put it: Keep it light.

Personally, I'd rather have skills than stuff. I know you need to have some stuff, but skills are infinitely more important than things.

Jerry always has great ideas, and is well respected around the internetz. Thanks for sharing, Jerry.

To the OP: you may find this useful as well: https://www.indianagunowners.com/fo...ster_preparedness/57182-show_us_your_bag.html

Basically what you need to do is pack what you think you would need for your suspected environment for about 3 days. Then take that pack to that environment. You will find what you need/don't need in the pack. Just keep repeating, and you will be a pro in no time ;).

EDIT: Don't forget - If you have a B.O.B. you better have a place to Bug Out to. Otherwise you will just be a refugee.

I would suggest caution with the 3 day time limit in determining the volume of items to pack (or store in bugging-in). Take a look at natural events such as floods, ice storms, tornado's, etc.

First, you have to decide in you are staying home or actually bugging out. Since you asked about BOB's my question is: where are you bugging out to and how long will it take to get there (by yourself or with family)? The distance and speed of the slowest traveler will determine the time required for supplies.

Once you have this determined, then you start looking at how much stuff you need to safely get there. Then you decide on the pack size or method of transport.

Mr. Young's list as usual are complete and extensive and are always a good place to look for suggestions!

+1 great point although i have that one covered. our south complex(aka my parents house in the country) is our rendevous point for the entire family. if all goes well i can be there in 2-2.5 hours with multiple routes to take if the main roads are compromised. there we keep the basement full of canned goods and water and ammo. i'm just trying to put together that one bag i can grab and go and live off of for 24-36 hours incase i cannot reach "home". thanks for all the great posts and keep the wisdom coming!
