The motors were ford based and some were supercharged with paxton belt drive units. Several records set at Bonneville with these cars.

Yep, family history in that Avanti.

Back in the days when Studebaker was starting to go under, my great uncle and his partner bought the rights to the Avanti and all the remaining parts left in the Studebaker factory. The two of them produced the fiberglass body Avanti on a custom order basis for quite a few years until old age and unfortunately end of life caused the line to be sold. Unfortunately the last owners moved production out of South Bend and killed it.

I had the privilege of getting a tour of the South Bend factory by my Uncle Leo, and I could see the pride he and his partner Nate took in hand building the cars. All were built to order, with many celebs being owners. Leo pointed out that due to EPA restrictions on emissions, they were buying certified engines from GM since they didn't have the money for certifying the original Studebaker engine. He was also not ashamed to note they were Corvette engines.

Don't see too many of those around these days. They were very advanced for the time, and from rumors I am hearing, there is talk of reserecting a modern Avanti.

Thank you Fenway for that photo. Brings back some great memories!

I rode in one of the cars you speak of. Yes it had a small block corvette engine in it. The original Stud. engines were based off of the small block ford in many ways. Andy Granitelli Took a few to the salt flats and set several records. The aero on these was tremendous.
