So far the guns turned in have ranged from automatic handguns to automatic assault rifles including several AK-47 models.

Getting $300 for a "automatic assault rifle"? I think NOT! If indeed such a weapon was turned in, the person was a fool. That rifle would be worth $20K+.

More likely this was a semi-automatic evil-looking rifle. So it _must_ be for assault, right?

Right now there are two pictures up, and with one being a VZ-58! I wonder if they put it up believing it to be an evil Kalashnikov when in fact the only thing it has in common is the caliber of the round used.

What we refer to today as semi auto was correctly termed "automatic" back in the day for automatically cycling the spent cartridge and loading a new one.
