The teachers at a Hillsboro, Oregon, middle school are okay with the students' hair styles, but not their hats. When an altercation ensued between some teachers and a student over his refusal to remove his hat, several students captured it on video. And apparently the teachers also have a problem with something that was recorded during the altercation because they confiscated the phones of the students, accessed their message and email apps, and deleted material from the phones.

    Tsk, tsk.

Send the video to another proxy as soon as it is recorded. Apparently the kids in Oregon aren't as smart as my granddaughter.

"The episode, which was captured on film by fellow students using their cell phones, shows two teachers circling the child and trying to escort him out of the gym. The boy was ultimately suspended and arrested for disorderly conduct and harassment."

Okay never mind that teachers confiscated kids' phones, which is pretty ****ed up anyway. WTF happened to schools? Back in the day you didn't wear hats in school. But the teachers back then didn't have to call the ****ing cops to arrest students who didn't want to take their hats off.

Exactly! I see nothing that states the child was in class with the hat on. For all we know the kid could have just came in for the day.it doesn't express whether other children were clothed with coats, hats, etc. The child could have felt harrassed being that he was the only one mandated to take off his hat. Apparently the situation was bad if multiple students felt the need to record the incident and if the school felt the need to delete the video prior to any other governering body.

Teachers take kids phones everyday. Use your phone for anything during the school day and they take it. Whats the problem?
Accessing the information on the phone and deleting it. Particularly when that information could have been used to show wrong-doing by the individuals who deleted it.

The administration had every right to take the phones, but accessing the information crossed the line in my opinion. Any official statutes/rulings on this anywhere? Can't be the first time it has happened.

Had the rugrats used the video they took to bring the law down on the school and its teachers or administrators, it would have "substantially disrupted" the operations of the school. Hence, the school had the imprimatur of law to do whatever it had to to prevent the law from disrupting its school day. After all, how can they be expected to teach if there're criminal investigations into their conduct afoot?

    Read purple where applicable.

The phones should be checked at the door. Learning id not done on google or facebook/twiter.

If I was caught with a calculator in school my but was in the deans office. No electronics.

If this goes to trial, could the teachers not be charged with tampering with evidence?
If what goes to trial? The incident with the male student or the confiscation/deletion of student phone info? THe latter would just be a civil trial I presume. If the former though, I suppose it could depend on the what actually transpired (did one of them hit the student?) and the desire of the prosecutor. SO, yeah, I guess they could, but they probably won't.

That's so 20th Century. Schools are issuing iPads, and in our school, we routinely 'look things up' on the internet. About 50% of my PK son's work is on the computer or electronic device. Older son does about 20-25% on it. Learning isn't just done at a desk with a bunch of books. In fact, for some kids, it doesn't happen that way at all.

They lost their "right to privacy' as to the contents of said property when they broke the rules banning their use. The students and their parents have voluntary subjected those rights to the school.

Same goes for all the laptops the schools are supplying to students.

I am dumbfounded so many don't understand what can happen when they sign the schools paperwork and student handbooks so they can attend .

Do you know for a fact that the use of phones is prohibited?

And, no, I seriously doubt violating the rules regarding the possession and/or use of certain devices in school grants the school the authority to access and manipulate the data on those devices.
