When I took my DOT exam, we went out on the road and encountered a set of tracks, so I stopped to do the school bus train track crossing rituals. The guy told me, "this track isn't active, look, that gate (chain link fence) is closed." I replied "that gate won't slow a train down for a millisecond" and finished my rituals. I don't know whether it was a trick question, so to speak, but I wasn't falling for it.

Same thing when I'm out riding my bike on the road. Cars can hurt me, bad. Therefore I try to avoid that. I just don't get this mentality where people won't consider the potential consequences of their actions, but I suppose a lot of it is the way they're coddled from birth and nothing bad is ever allowed to happen to them. It's impossible to get an owie on the playground, insurance covers any loss, they're all unique little snowflakes, and the world owes them recognition of their greatness.

"Not considering the potential consequences of their actions." they are only taking a cue from Washington D.C. I mean if the logic is good enough for the President....

A relative of mine is an Engineer with the train company in question. He said he worked with the Engineer yesterday that is in said video.
Said the Engineer has been truly shaken to his core. Had a hard time getting back into the cab for several days afterwards.

But had they been hit and killed by the train there would be new rules put in place for the railroad industry because it was obviously the train's fault.

You mean something like arguing that every cop should have to start his shift by pissing in a cup because some have a drinking problem?

This is interesting. I know with CSX after an incident the crew in immediately pulled from service for a period of time. No way they would be tasked with running a train only days after something like this.

I'm curious as to why there wasn't a walkway on the side of the tracks, like for emergencies or something. What if the engineer had to get out of the engine for some reason like if the train broke down on the bridge? I guess it might encourage people to trespass, i dunno.

I wonder how old the bridge is? I doubt it was a consideration when it was built [well, obviously].

Maybe the bridge builder didn't think that a couple of dumbasses would be needing a walkway to get away from a train that was where it was supposed to be, unlike said dumbasses.
