    As mentioned before, he should not have talked to the police. Sounds like he never actually did anything wrong.

    But.... even before talking to the police, why did the female friend turn him in? Overreacton on her part? Or maybe something more serious than that? Did she just suddenly just get scared after so many perfectly normal conversations? Or did she know him long enough to have some suspicions about him and maybe she didn't overreact? How many conversations among college students involved some pretty outrageous topics? Probably a great many. Then why did this person react as she did? Was she acting reasonably? Was she just a freaked out emotional girl with no reason to react this way? Can the school officials just write her off as some kind of nut case? They're probably thinking that one of these folks is a nutcase, and on which one can they afford to take a chance?
