I see a lot of fakes at shows, either at tables or from people wanting to trade. Sometimes also just someone wanted to talk about the really good deal they got on it. So, these are starting to get a lot harder to spot than they used to be in the past. It was pretty easy before. There is a Benchmade Enthusiast group on facebook and quite a few members there that have gotten fakes have shared side by side pictures to help teach others to spot fakes. I've compiled some of these pictures below.
These are all slightly different, but as you'll see there are some common things to look for to spot them. The biggest thing is to really study a photo of the actual knife from Benchmade and just make sure it's identical. Sometimes older ones are harder to tell because they might have changed them slightly over the years. But for the most part, this should at least help.
First up is just a basic blue class benchmade box. You can spot fakes just by looking at the boxes sometimes and even bringing up a pic on your phone to compare if needed. In this first picture, the FAKE box is on the left. REAL box is on the Right.
1. Label is off - Font, spacing, font weight, etc.
2. Line pattern is different on both sections (top and bottom)
3. Foam pattern is off (this is usually the easiest sign)
Next up is a comparison between 2 Osborne Knives. Again the Fake is on the left, and the real one is on the right.
1. Handles colors are off
2. Blade shape and angles are wrong
3. Blade steel on the box is wrong
4. Foam is completely wrong
5. Benchmade Logo on the blade is wrong
Here is an Anthem. Green one is a Fake.
1. scales on this one are pretty obvious with the missing belt clip holes
2. the logo placement, font, and registered mark is wrong on the blade as well
3. Thumbstud and Axis lock hardware are wrong
4. Blade steel font is wrong
And here is an example of some Bugouts, one of their more popular blades.
Carbon Fiber (top) is the real one. The bottom Jade handles is the FAKE.
1. Again, the logo on the blade is a giveaway. Mainly the size, font, and the Registered Mark
2. Belt clip mounting holes are wrong (2 holes vs 3 holes)
3. Screw hardware is also slightly different
4. On this one, the inside of the boxes are also an obvious giveaway.
