That would be the case if they weren't selective when required.

That said - I'm 100% positive a lot of the monitoring/data collection/profiling is done in an automated fashion with a full search of some sort being available.

Which is so effective that they can only catch those terrorists that they recruit themselves.

Mmm. Not quite. While SOME of the events Orwell talked about in 1984 have come to pass, many, indeed the ones that make it such a cruel story, have not. A lot of people who talk about the novel either haven't read it, or haven't read it recently.

In a lot of ways we have less direct government monitoring than there was in the 50s.

^^^^I wasn't going to mention you by name but you were the first one that came to mind. I was also thinking of a certain INGO'r who like to OC an AK-47 and not carry any ID of any kind and then video record it.

I seem to remember that and often wondered why the police kept saying AK-47 other then the fact we were talking about an AK-47 before the alleged bicycle road trip

I'd be willing to bet that we've had a few posters who were provacateurs too. I recall a now-banned poster starting a thread out of the blue about marching on Washington and hanging the politicans from trees and asking who was with him. Understandably, the thread disappeared quickly but it seemed a little too blatant to be written off as a misguided and disgruntled rant.
