FairTax | American for Fair Taxation | Tax Reform Solutions | Consumption Tax - Americans For Fair Taxation

    What is the FairTax?

The FairTax is a simple, fair and transparent solution to replace our current tax system.

It treats all citizens equally and allows American businesses to thrive, all while generating the same tax revenue for the government through the establishment of a national retail sales tax of 23% on new goods and services.

Actually, it should generate more revenue for big brother. Everyone will have to pay taxes on everything they purchase. This would apply to a CEO of industry all the way down to Pimps and thieves. It would also include those who sit on the porch and live off of us. That 50% who now pay no taxes at all.

Tax reform is not in the best interests of politicians on either sides. The tax code is a primary tool used to "bribe" voters and reward special interests. As much as they talk about it and as much as many would like to see it happen, don't hold your breath.

Indeed, it would take a very large bottom-up movement to get the tax code reformed.

Don't look for that to happen either, since a large majority are more than happy with the status quo or too lazy to want to change it.

I always wondered about the 23% on "new" goods and services. Take for example a "new" car...usually made up of about 5000 or so parts, give or take a few hundred. Each "new" part would have a 23% markup that the car manufacturer has to pay in tax. The manufacturer in turn builds and assembles a "new" car that you and I have to pay the 23% markup in taxes. Collectively, the government has gotten 23% in revenue from all the parts and then another 23% when the car is sold. All the while, this cost is being passed onto the consumer because the parts makers and the car manufacturer is not paying for the tax. You have just doubled the amount of taxes you pay to the government for your car purchase.

Yeah buddy, that's a real winner!!!

Where ever my GPS says I am
When I file for this year, I will be paying somewhere around 800-1,000. My deductions have changed. Last year when I tried to see how much I would be getting back refund wise online. I paid somewhere around 2200 in taxes, and refund was going to be around 1000 as single filing (not head of household like I could up until this year).

Such a retail tax would only be levied against the final consumer product.

What you describe is a Value Added Tax (VAT), which is popular in Europe.

In the VAT, after you "add value" to a product, only the value you added is your tax liability, and through payment and refund, you come to a nominal 2% or 3% tax on your level of production.

In the fairtax, only RETAIL goods and services are taxed. No other taxes, period, end of discussion. One tax, one rate, applied one time.

Also, everyone pays AT LEAST 14% of their gross to the Feds. 7% from you and 7% from your boss. If you're the boss, you pay 14%.

Then you have medicare, medicaid, welfare tax (FICA). Then if there is any left over, you get to pay "income" tax, as if you weren't already paying tax on your income.

If you're retired, you got to pay tax on your income, then you pay a tax on the interest your money made.

    What a world.

I also like how the Feds define my net income after the first round of taxes as "Adjusted Gross Income" like those taxes don't count for some reason.

    Pisses me off....

I'd suggest firing your CPA and hiring one that knows what they're doing.

If you're saying nothing has changed in the amount you earn or how you're doing your withholdings and you're paying $2k a year more something ain't right.

Obama had the withholding amount reduced to make you feel like you're getting a break since your take home pay went up. That was part of the stimulus package.

I'll have to do some more research on what was put into the back end as a "gotcha" but the crux of it is that less was withheld to make you feel like you got a raise, only to get nailed for the difference at tax time.

The idea was to get you to spend more, too. Just like the gubmint.

I get a refund every year. File married with a mortgage. No kids but I only claim myself on my tax docs. Therefore they take some but not all and I do not owe when I file.

99 years ago there was NO irs or federal income tax.

I wish everyone who supported the idea we needed either of them, or a federal flat/sales tax would drop dead. I abhor communists and socialists.

I make a lot, I pay a lot. Refund? lol, sorry, not stupid enough to give the government a free loan.

    +1.

It truly saddens me so many Americans don't realize that their bodies, time, and labor are their own private property. The worst part is some folks still believe that they actually owe the criminal scum something.

I was really happy this year to get close to $1100 back in a refund until I realized that I had to pay those filthy slimy parasites in Washington D.C. just over $13000. That realization quickly wiped the smile off my face.

But you can be sure that they appreciate the $1100 interst free loan you gave them. ;)
