How have your employers reacted to the new "Parking Lot" Bill?

    I got an interesting e-mail today at work from my employer. Like many companies around the state, they currently prohibit firearms on company property. This of course is within their ability as a private corporation.

    I respect their decisions, and certainly understand that top management has a difficult task of balancing many factors regarding employee safety and satisfaction.

    Note that I've edited out our company's name, because it is not at all my intent to cast the decision in a negative light nor do I want others to view it that way.

    The purpose of this post is to generate discussion on how different employers around the state are dealing with the new law. If you want to bash employer A or B for their views, take it to another thread. If bashing takes place I will request the mods close the thread.

    If you want to suggest that I simply ignore the current prohibition, take it to another thread. It isn't relevant here.

    Gov. Mitch Daniels recently signed into law legislation that allows employees to keep guns in locked vehicles even if those vehicles are parked on company property. That law takes effect on July 1, 2010.

    The Company's policy prohibits employees from bringing guns onto all Company property – and it remains in effect. We are in the process of reviewing the applicability of the law to each Company facility. Until further notice, employees are not permitted to bring firearms onto any Company property, which includes vehicles in the parking lot.

    I thought long and hard about the statement, and decided that I would take it at face value: the company is studying the law so that it can make an appropriate determination on the current policy that prohibits firearms on the property.

    well that's a good letter. It reminds people that the law takes effect in July and until then, their policy is still in effect. Where I work I've heard employees talk about it, some are for and some are against it. I haven't heard a peep from management. I'm sure the time comes they will just stick their head in the sand and not remind people that it's allowed.

    It used to be my works policy that guns were allowed in the parking lots until corporate handed down a mandate with in the last few weeks that it was against corporate policy.

    so everyone at my work basically gave it a 'meh' when the law was signed.

    I agree with you to a point. They aren't studying anything. The law is clear that unless your employer is in the "we paid off our legislators with <wink wink> "campaign donations" <nudge nudge> so we could be exempted from this law" group, come July 1, the law applies, even if they don't give you that "further notice" to which they referred. I think they have issued this statement to make clear that they don't like the law and until it DOES take effect, they fully intend to prevent their employees from exercising this right right up until 23:59:59, 6/30/10.

    I do not suggest that you ignore the policy; that is your decision to do or not do. If I was making any recommendation or suggestion, it would be that you watch your six closely in the event you DO decide to violate it, because with a policy statement like that, I'd not put it past an anti-gun employer to step up vehicle checks (looking through windows, checking for NRA/whatever window or bumper stickers, etc.) until then.

    I got that note today too. I took it mostly like BOR did. "We don't like this, and we currently have our law dept. searching for loopholes."

    Nothing at my office. We cannot bring into the building. But, I park in a garage in a state park. I also don't shoot my mouth off that I do or plan to keep a gun in my car.

    My company also has a no firearms on company property policy. We have not yet received any correspondence about the upcoming change of law. I drive a company vehicle, so I still will not be able to exercise my right.

    How did my employer react to the Parking Lot Bill?

    They didn't, rather, I assume that they were pro-active.

    My company is on the exempted list, since they are a a registered DHS chemical plant.

    Really matters not, no one is searching my car without a warrant.

    I've looked through my employee handbook in the past, and no where does it mention firearms. From what I can tell, there's not a policy for or against having firearms on company property. That said, I 1) leave mine in the car, and 2) don't plan on letting anyone know I have it in the car. For the first point, I have a good enough job that I don't want to take chances. For the second point, for the same reason I carry concealed, I prefer if others around me were unaware of the fact that I have a firearm accessible to me (and no, I'm not turning this into an OC/CC debate).

    July 1 will come and go with no change to my current practices.

    90% of my employment is in Communist Chicago or outlying areas so I am screwed when I cross the border. I love having to stop in the ghetto and disarm myself and lock it up before going into the Socialist state of Illinois.

    Being that Indiana is an employment-at-will state,
    it seems that the only real advantage this new law is having a solid basis for a wrongful termination lawsuit.

    I too refuse to publicize the presence or absence of a firearm in my vehicle at any time.

    I just read the same email. It's good to see they've acknowledged it, but some of the people I work with here already believe that this Company is "above the law" and has already permanently banned guns. Hopefully I can set my co-workers straight later today.

    They can say whatever they want come July 1st, everything changes.

    Nothing changes. The law is completely meaningless. Indiana is an at-will employment state. Even if it weren't, it's easy to find or manufacture any other reason to terminate your employment.

    My employer has been mum on the issue. Then again, I work for a company whose headquarters are located in a different state so maybe they didn't get the memo.

    I think alot of companies will try this , saying it is still under review , and we still have a no gun policy.

    Has anyone ever had a company search their vehicle , with the intent on finding a firearm ?
    I still agree 100% with this new law , I think people have a right to be protected during their commute to and from work.
    I know I am not the only one who carries to and from work everyday , and most people leave them in their car anyway , I however am in a different boat , I work off site , and choose to carry with me all the time , our work rules don't mention anything about it , so I don't bring no attention to it.
    I go to bad neighborhoods in the middle of the night , so it just makes sense to be protected.
