    Did I hear a call for ideas?:D

    1. Mandatory firearms education in public schools at grade 4, 6, 8 and high school.

    2. Mandatory qualification with M16 before graduation of high school is permitted.

    3. Tax on those not owning firearms.

    4. Waiver of sales tax for all those carrying a handgun(s).

    5. Construction of public ranges especially at schools.

    6. Making firearms education expenses and tuition and ammunition tax deductible above the line.

    There are many, many more.:D

Are you considering a run for office on that platform?

One would think there should be a strong correlation between a States Brady score and it's murder rate. A high Brady score should align with a low murder rate if gun laws work as intended. Yet it does not appear that the strength of the gun laws has a definite impact.

For example using 2010 murder rate data from the FBI:

    California____Brady score 81 Murder rate 4.9
Utah________ Brady score 0 Murder rate 1.9
    New Jersey___Brady score 72 Murder rate 4.2
    Alaska_______Brady score 0 Murder rate 4.4
    Mass________Brady score 65 Murder rate 3.2
    Arizona______Brady score 0 Murder rate 6.4
    Illinois______Brady score 35 Murder rate 5.5
    Indiana______Brady score 4 Murder rate 4.5

So if there was a strong relationship between gun laws and murder rate I would think if you looked at the top five States in each list(Brady score vs murder rates) then surely 3 of 5 would be in both lists. Brady score is in ( ), population density rank is in (()) and murder rate is the other number.

    • Top Brady States__________vs______Lowest murder rates
    • (81)California 4.9 ((11))__________(6)New Hampshire 1.0 ((21))
    • (72)New Jersey 4.2 ((1))__________(6)Vermont 1.1 ((30))
    • (65)Massachusetts 3.2 ((3))_______(2)Idaho 1.3 ((44))
    • (62)New York 4.5 ((7))____________(7)Iowa 1.3 ((36))
    • (58)Connecticut 3.6 ((4))__________(4)Wyoming 1.4 ((49))

At first glance it would seem low Brady scores correlate to low murder rates(which is good) and densely populated States have a lot of gun laws.

So how about States with highest murder rates and their ()Brady ranking and their (()) population density ranking

    1. (T-47) Louisiana 11.2 ((24))
    2. (7) Maryland 7.4 ((5))
    3. (T-39) Mississippi 7.0 ((32))
    4. (T-39) Missouri 7.0 ((28))
    5. (T-39) New Mexico 6.9 ((45))

I include population density to address another common idea that it also effects the murder rate. That is people living all cramped together seem to kill each other more often and people with more breathing room seem to coexist better regardless of laws in place.

But it doesn't seem to necessary be the case.
Out of the lowest murder rates 4 out of 5 are in the bottom half of population density. Yet the bottom half of population density also has 3 out of 5 of the highest murder rates.

But to be honest here there does seem to appear to be a pattern of a low Brady score to high murder rate correlation at first glance which contradicts the first set of numbers where a low Brady had low murder rate.
4 out of 5 of the highest murder rate States have very low Brady scores.

    So what happened there?

So maybe if we compare a State's major cities and their () Brady rank and murder rate we could see these high Brady scores clearly doing some good.

    • Highest murder rate_________________City population
    • (T-47)New Orleans 49.1______________(4)New York 6.4
    • (T-39)St. Louis 40.5__________________(1)Los Angeles 7.6
    • (7)Baltimore 34.8____________________(9)Chicago 15.2
    • (11)Detroit 34.5____________________(T-39)Houston 11.8
    • (2) Newark 32.1_____________________(10) Philadelphia 19.6

It is clear that States with the largest cities score high on Brady (four of the 5 biggest cities are in the Brady top 10) and the largest cities do not have the highest murder rate. So there may be something to it. Perhaps very large cities need the extra laws but once past the mega city level the laws don't seem to help :dunno:

I post all this because I was curious if the Brady rankings really showed anything and putting the data together made it easier for me to compare. So I was basically going to do this anyway, so why not make it a post?

I'm still not sure what conclusions can be drawn.

The two worst cities(2010) for murder rate have very low Brady scores. 4 out of the 5 worst States for murder rates also have very low Brady scores.
That does not help support the relaxing of gun laws will reduce murder rate argument.

Yet 3 out of the 5 worst cities for murder rate have very high(relatively) Brady scores and the 5 States with the lowest murder rate also have very low Brady scores.
So it would seem that adding laws and restrictions does not necessary help lower the murder rate either.

Sorry for the funky formatting. The forum kept squishing my tables together. :wallbash:

I am so proud to be a Hoosier, and glad I have family in both AZ and TN.

we all know gun laws aren't the answer to violent acts. unfortunately common sense isn't so common these days.

I actually cried a little. I love this state.

I love these ratings. Absolutely ludicrous. Still, it's nice to know that we're doing well.

So, I take it it's like golf, then? Least points is better?
