you can find a "psychologist" to call anything an "illness". first, it justifies their existence and expense of obtaining a degree, and second, it facilitates people from taking responsibility for their actions which ultimately takes you back to reason number one. You're not an idiot, you're "sick", that'll be $2000 please. Come back if your treatment isn't working.. (hahahah)

The main reason treatment doesn't work is because the addict doesn't do the work. As my brother (who is a shrink for the Veteran's Administration) likes to say, there is no pill that will cure your lifestyle problems. Regular doctors have enough trouble getting people to exercise or eat right or do their physical therapy. Psychiatrists, psychologists, and counselors have to try to get people to change their behavior, often when the person doesn't really want it to change. It doesn't mean they're a bad caregiver, it means they've got an uphill battle, with almost every patient, almost all the time.

You have to be willing to do the work. That means confronting your anxieties, fears, doubts, and (worst of all, IMO) the people in your life that cause distress and drive you to your drug of choice. Most addicts can't handle that kind of confrontation -- that's why they're addicts.

Saying something is an addiction does not remove responsibility for it. Addiction is a learned pattern of behavior. It's understandable and explainable, but it's not an excuse.
I understand where you are coming from, but I'll agree, when society stops treating it like an excuse.

There are two very popular, but very destructive models for looking at addiction: the first, as you allude, is the "addiction is not the addict's fault" model. Correct or not, I tend to see it as the "left-wing response".

The other is the "addiction makes you a bad person" model. It's what I tend to see as the "right-wing response", and is characterized by belittling or dehumanizing language like "he's just a drunk", or "she's just a druggie". There is a huge difference between saying "you do bad things" and "you are a bad person".

Neither model is helpful. Addicts are human beings, with problems they don't think they can face, so they turn to things that make them feel better. Turning to the drug of choice is a decision that they make, so it is ultimately their responsibility. But it is their behavior that should upset the rest of us, not their existence.

And how did he wreck his car into a tree anyhow? Did he have his pants around his ankles and his putter in his hand?
I imagine it was in his haste to put distance between himself and his wife swinging a 9 iron at his head after she read his text messages. OMG...she is hot. I can see being addicted to that. :naughty:

And who knows. Perhaps she's a psychotic nut job...but I'm hoping she takes him for every dime he has after she kicks him to the curb.

    The cure?

A ringing phone, weekly payroll to meet, overhead, a receptionist with a kleptomanic boyfriend who can't beat probation, a mortgage, a home to run, personal bills, a family, an armoury full of dirty guns, a calendar full of blue and black ink, and a body shot full of steroids.

Man, believe me, that's the last thing on your mind.:D

Its a change of heart like anything else. The good news is that its not a chemical addiction as in drugs, ETOH, & nicotine. Even the serotonin levels in sex addicts don't reach levels that they do in couples that are still enjoying intimacy after several decades.

I think its a scape goat calling his infidelity an addiction. It makes it less personable and no longer his fault. How weak. He needs to be a real man.

    It's not a scapegoat. It's a $500,000,000.00 business decision.

How about the old story where dad catches you smoking and makes you
smoke the whole pack to teach you a lesson? You'll be so sick
you won't want to smoke again.

I wonder if that would work here. :dunno:
Mrs. Woods catches Tiger in the act and makes him go
through a whole pack of cocktail waitresses!?!

    It's worth a shot ............................. or two. :D

Sex addiction sounds like a real problem, I hope he beats it.

That might only exacerbate the problem. :twocents:

I have to agree here. I think it came very easy for him and he just didn't have the want to push it away. I'm not blaming women here by any means but I'm sure some looked at Tiger as a meal ticket. All bills paid, fancy car etc. I'm sure (it) was thrown at him on a regular basis.
Look at the NBA, better yet look at Muhammed Ali why for them was it over looked? Must be a golf thing.

lol, have a baby by me baby, be a millionaire

How did all those NBA players suddenly drop out of the lime light a few years ago, when it was found that there was across the country, a group of women who would always meet up with the visiting team in their hotel rooms. Groupies was the name used back then.

The underlying problem is poor impulse control.

Pretty typical with younger people, and certainly typical with individuals that have desirable, young women willing to enable his responses.

Treatment: Psychotherapy to promote maturity and self control.
