I guess I've just never had the chance to use one of quality, must be one of those things I'd have to see to believe. Any shop's out there that will let you try before you buy with optics? Midwest maybe?

I look at red dots the same way i look at hdmi cables.

Yeah you can pay more for a monster cable over the cheap chinese ones, but they do the same thing. Not much going on inside one of those that can justify my spending extra.

What's the value add? They show a red dot on a piece of glass, no magnification so no clarity problems. If the 30$ model does the job, and hasn't failed me in the past year getting a fair amount of abuse. What is going to be different when I drop 500$ for a name brand?

The difference is night and day, if your hard on your gear. I spent about 10 years (and a lot of money) buying cheap red dots before I learned to buy once, cry once. The optics are the most important part of your weapon. It boggles my mind when I see a $1000+ AR-15 with a $30 optic.

I thought this little guide put together by Chris Upchurch was interesting.

    Rifle optics at various ranges

This is inspired by some of the discussion of Gabe's The Power of Adaptation thread, but I've decided to start a new thread to avoid taking that one down any more of a bunny trail.

Note that the following assumes good quality examples of all the types of scopes listed: good glass, mil reticle (on the 3-9x, 6-18x, 1-8x, and fixed 10x) or BDC reticle (on the ACOG and 1-4), repeatable turret adjustments, etc. The ACOG is assumed to be a 3x, 3.5x or 4x illuminated BDC model. I listed common variable ranges as examples (1-4, 3-9, 6-18).

    0-10 yards
    Best: Point shooting
    Good: Red dot
    OK: ACOG, 1-4x, 1-8x
Can be made to work: 3-9x
Not very suitable: 6-18x, fixed 10x

    10-50 yards
    Best: Red dot
    Good: ACOG, 1-4x, 1-8x
    OK: 3-9x
Can be made to work: 6-18x
    Not very suitable: fixed 10x

    50-100 yards
Best: Red dot, ACOG, 1-4x, 1-8x
    Good: 3-9x
    OK: 6-18x
Can be made to work: fixed 10x

    100-300 yards
    Best: ACOG, 1-4x, 3-9x, 1-8x
    Good: 6-18x
    OK: fixed 10x
Can be made to work: Red dot (at 100, shades more into 'Not very suitable' as the range increases)

    300-500 yards
    Best: 3-9x, 6-18x, 1-8x
    Good: ACOG, 1-4x, fixed 10x

    500-800 yards
    Best: 6-18x
    Good: 3-9x, 1-8x, fixed 10x
Can be made to work: ACOG, 1-4x

    800-1000 yards
    Best: 6-18x
    Good: fixed 10x
    OK: 3-9x, 1-8x
    Not very suitable: ACOG, 1-4x
