Yeah, this. Do the knife thing, and make sure and come back and post what happened. :yesway:
I do that but I also whisper softly in it's ear, "Duck Season, Wabbit Season" when I make the cut.

I think the general rule of thumb is you do what preserves the most meat. Crush the skull, pull the head off, twist the neck. If you can't stomach pulling the head off by hand, step on it and pull. I am talking small game and birds here.

As for large game, approach from behind so it runs AWAY from you. Long stick to poke the eye. I keep my muzzle back away from the Deer where I have control of it and it won't get hit, kicked or pushed aside.

PS I never cut a deers throat to finish it.

After dropping a deer I usually don't get in a hurry to leave the stand. More than one time another has shown up shortly afterward.:)

Had a spine shot on a deer. Could only move its head and neck. Stabbed into the neck just below the jawbone and pulled out to the edge cutting the jugular. Bled out in less than a minute.

Deer-second shot to the head. I did see a guy use a knife once, one quick stab to the artery in the neck. This was an old guy who was a butcher, a farmer and a hunter with a lot of experience, I wouldn't try it.

Turkey, Pheasant, Squirrel or Rabbit-the aforementioned "head stomp".

Dove-grab the head and flick your wrist; the head will pop right off.

Quail-head stomp or wring their neck depending on how lively they are.

Coyote-laugh maniacally whilst riddling their corpse with bullets.

Dont shoot a turkey again..it doesnt take much to mess up what little meat there is....simply step on his head and let him break his own neck...and what ever you do keep your hands/arms away from his legs until your certain he is dead. I learned my lesson the hard way and it only cost me a couple dozen stitches to the hand and forearm.
with deer..just put another shot in the heart..or head if you want.
    small game..their skulls are fragile..use your imagination.:dunno:

near Bedford on a whole lot of land.
I've only had a couple deer who weren't DRT, both spine shot and I could see they were spine shot since they were both trying to get up but the back legs wouldn't work. One I punched the knife through the throat's major vessels, and the other I head shot with the carry gun. All the other deer I've shot died in less than a minute.

Ever see somebody pick up a rabbit that isn't dead yet? That's always good for a laugh. I would rather handle angry cats than a PO'd rabbit.

I had a pastor who went hunting with a guy and his 12 year old son. One came alive inside the 12 year old's game pouch on his vest.

I've spine shot a doe with a shotgun. It was trying to crawl away with only its front legs. I was able to walk up to it and place a shot to its upper neck which killed it instantly. Cutting the throat with a knife never crossed my mind.
