Preserve government at all costs. Nothing should be done to downsize government. Continue the status quo and demand that all the other states pick up the tab, because you're government and its myriad programs are too bleeding big. Preserving their power is all they're about in every state. It's time they realised they're no longer needed.
    From Bloomberg
Dec. 24 (Bloomberg) -- California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, anticipating a $21 billion state budget deficit, plans to ask President Barack Obama to ease mandates and minimums on social programs to save as much as $8 billion.
The Republican governor plans to seek the relief, according to a California official who asked not to be identified because details haven’t been resolved. Instead of seeking one-time stimulus money or a bailout, the most-populous U.S. state wants the federal government to reduce mandates and waive rules stipulating expenditures on programs such as indigent health care, the official said.
California is among states most affected by the economic recession. It has the lowest credit rating and recorded the nation’s second-highest rate of home foreclosures, trailing only Nevada. Unemployment peaked at 12.5 percent in October amid the loss of 687,700 jobs from the year before, when the jobless figure was 8 percent. Wealth declined as the stock market lost 40 percent of its value in 2008.
“I’ve seen the reports that Governor Schwarzenegger was specifically looking for aid and it’s something that obviously folks at the White House are taking a look at,” White House spokesman Bill Burton said. He commented to reporters on Air Force One today as the president and his family flew to Hawaii for Christmas vacation.

Mike Church said we need to treat California like a hemorhoid. Put a rubber band around it and let it fall off.

When are these libs going to realize their policy is what is driving our economy down? They still think it's because they aren't socialist enough.

I just wish they would let me run my business like they run the government. I could buy anything I wanted whether it was useful or not. If I ran out of money I could just print more. I could give free handouts to anyone who wanted them. But, unfortunately I have to make a living in the real world so I have to be careful and not spend more than I make.

that's the socialist way, if its not working just throw more money at it. God forbid the policy be the problem, as it was soundly voted for by elected officials:rolleyes:

As much as I would like California to fall off the fault line and into the sea it is the Worlds seventh or eighth largest economy. Yes, the WORLD. It accounts for about 15 percent of our GDP. Makes Texas look like a pimple on its arse.

Don't have the answer but if cutting services and shrinking Gov't is part of the solution to California's budget woes -- thereby shrinking gov't but allowing the economy to make stuff for the rest of us I am all for it.

I like fresh fruit and vegetables so as long as those trucks keep rolling to Indiana and keep Indiana packing workers stocking my Kroger shelves I vote for California.

We just need to cull their population about 35 percent.

What's the point if we are subsidizing that rat hole for more than what we are benefiting? What are we spending on Welfare, food stamps, prisons, etc to California?

I agree. Prune back the government. Cut back on layers and layers of wasteful bureaucracy. If you can't afford it don't do it. Run the government along the same lines as you run a household; don't spend more than you make. Force the leaders to make decisions and only go with the programs that they can afford.

Fortunately many state and local governments seem to be cutting back now but you know as soon as the economy picks back up, they are going to start all of these programs back up. We need to prevent them from doing that.

I just don't know enough about the real economics but it appears where California goes economically the rest of the States have to follow. Indiana has had enough hard times. I don't want to subsidize pie in the sky ridiculous programs any more than the next guy.

I just hate the situation and am tired of this spend spend spend bull. If able bodied men and women were made to get jobs or attempt self sufficiency we wouldn't have these problems.

That has been one of my big beefs about the healthcare bill. It creates yet another department charged with overseeing yet another handout program. All of us who work will one way or another pay just a little a bit more of the money that we earn by working for it to provide something for people who don't work for it. Where does it end?

Wait. If I read the original story posted right, what Cali is asking for is not that the federal government spend more that but allow them to spend less on federally mandated programs. What's the problem with that?

The problem with bureaucracy is the same problem with consultant groups. It is in their best interest to do just good enough of a job to keep the ball rolling, while making it impossible to remove them, as it brings the ball to a grinding halt.

I'm just average Joe I don't own a business but even I can see the way the government does things IS the problem.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. Discounting douche bag CEO's in billion dollar companies sucking up million dollar bonus's in tax payer bail out money I have never heard a business owner stand up and say this socialist method will work for them. So what is this, balls ahead and screw the American small business's?

I would love to lower the federally-mandated spending, but I don't foresee that actually happening in CA. I think the Governor is getting the request out there in a way that he can say he asked for no money. But, there is no way President Obama is going to allow less federal spending in a state he wants to reward for 2008 and keep happy for 2012.

Mr. Obama will probably come in with the bailout to make sure there is no shortfall in services, especially in what he claims is "the worst economy since the Great Depression."

Get ready to open that pocketbook!! :)

I'm not saying you're wrong, but the billionaire CEO's are getting hosed in California. If you check out the exodus statistics, Montana has imported thousands of "rich" Californians recently. They're being taxed right out of the state and running to more tax-friendly areas. This turn of events has added to California's tax shortfall.
It's a vicious cycle that the politicians will never understand. Tax the rich and they move to where the taxes are lower..... THEY have the money to do that.:dunno:

Good point. So the ones that cant run, stay and perish.
Is that about right? That is what I'm thinking. Small business will not be able to thrive in a Obama socialist economy.

And most importantly they are ruining Montana! For those that have been to Montana and spent time there or traveled throughout you will know what I mean. The thought of the Super rich polluting the night sky with their uber lit homes and demands drives me nuts.

Least we forget that Cali. has the largest illegal alien population in the country costing them billions, how about send ing them back to Mexico and stoping all aid to any illegal alien and confiscating any property and cash made here in the U.S.
