For a handgun you can tell from my name what I would recommend, but I also like the XD & XDM's, and for the caliber, if there is a gun range in your area they may have an assortment of handguns for you to try out, but you cannot go wrong with the #45. For a holster I like the Forbus for OWB, and for IWB, Crossbreed's supertuck. And the most important thing is safety. If you have very little or no gun experience I recommend that you take a certified training course.
