How far is your headboard from the wall? I hear that same noise like two, three times a day sometimes ;)

In the late 70's I moved into a country apt (on 180 acres) about 40 mi N of NYC. I met the young couple next door. She was a babe. I was single @ the time. Our bedrooms shared the same wall next to my bed. I have to say I enjoyed our time together (on my side of the wall). The synchronicity was amazing. Later, I found a picture that looked like her in a porn mag (that fell out of a tree into my lap). When I mentioned this to another neighbor, she confirmed my info. Ahhhh those were heady times....for him more than for me. That was a time of girlfriend famine shortly 2B followed by a girly feast. Funny how that works. I'm married to the best one out of that dream time. That was 33 yrs ago. Did I mention ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.......

dont be so quick to dismiss raccoons. they dont need a tree to climb up your house. Even seen em climb the corners on aluminum siding (I used to own/operate a wildlife control biz) And they WILL sound like a two hundred pund man in your attic. Make sure you have a chimney cap and no holes is your soffits n eaves.

could also be kids out ... %^**$% nocking ...nockin on doors then running

I thought about your earlier post so I checked the attics and didn't see any signs of wildlife.
You may be right about the kids though. We had our mailbox blown up with a "Works Bomb" last year. It was right after I ran a bunch of kids out of a house that was being built. So I'm not the most liked person by the neighborhood kids.

You'd be surprised by how much noise a woodpecker can make tapping on a facia board. I have sworn that we were under attack before only to find said woodpecker bashing his head against the siding. Also blue jays will grab seed and pound them on gutters to crack them creating quite a cacophony.

Good point. Because of the proximity of the kids bedrooms to the top of the stairs I probably would have stayed closer to the stair entrance/exit putting myself between the kids and possible attacker instead of going straight into their rooms. Since they were already awake I should have kept it visible.

It did make me realize I unknowingly built a house that gives me a tactical advantage coming from the upstairs to the downstairs. The stairs begin one way stops a large landing then continue the opposite direction from the loft upstairs I can see all of the stairs, half the dining room and about 8 feet down each hall. Also the lights in the far hall that runs the same direction as the stairs and the carraige and porch lights will show the shadow of any would-be attacker.

Good that you noticed this. My take on the situation. If your house and the landing offers an advantage then consider using it. Wife in room check. Kids accounted for check. No reason to go running down the stairs. Why not just keep yourself and your front sight between the scary noise and the family. Take a breath, evaluate, then choose a course of action that you deem most appropriate.

I would be very surprised. We don't have any trees over 8 ft tall ( new construction ) They would have to be some GIANT coons I could feel it in the house.
I did notice that the dogs never barked or were concerned until the kids came around them.
You wouldn't think they would've gotten in at my mom's house either. It was this time last year to be exact, AND I have seen several baby coons abandoned on the roads to work.

They can get in anywhere, regardless of whether there are trees or not. Momma's get in and feed the babies, and then they destroy the inside if they aren't forced out.

I would still check to see if you have any scrapings or dirt marks going up any siding/on the roof and stuff.

Can we interrupt this post and hear some more about that babe, please. It is infinitely more interesting than the raccoons.

OK, here's the part I left out (so as not to spoil the fantasy). I later heard after they broke up and moved out that he contracted herpes from her. This was shortly b4 the AIDS scourge, when herpes was spreading like, well, herpes. I hope this unjacks this thread.

A few years ago--in fact right after the earthquake--I heard several large booms like canon fire going off. The next night I heard one or two. Nothing on the news or local paper. I posted a question about it on the forum for the local paper and found that several people had heard it too - all over town.

Point is, it could be shocks from an earthquake. Sometimes they can sound like sonic booms but cause no real shaking. They have sometimes been called "Seneca Guns" and Lewis and Clark mentioned hearing them around the mountains. They said it sounded like "six-pound guns firing" They've also been heard in New York and North Carolina rather frequently. Don't know if this is what you heard but it is a possibility.

    water?

Do you have a water softener, were your sprinklers on, or was the washing machine or anything else running. Water running through pipes can sometimes get air in them and/or your knockers could have been getting a workout. That would sound like loud banging in a house. Just a thought.

Maybe it was your guardian angel, hoping to wake you up to the fact that an unloaded G19 may be alright to conceal, but is a pretty anemic choice for HD.

Could have been near by gunfire.
I was awoken by what I at the time though was someone pounding on my back door.
I went to see and no one was there. I looked out the window and there were police cars coming from all directions to the club next door. Turned out to be a repeat of the gunfire I witnessed a few weeks previous.

We had a woodpecker spend a couple of hours a day for two weeks trying to peck through the galvanized aluminum weather cap on our chimney once. Woodpeckers are idiots.

Same here.. a few weeks back, one day prior to our minor quake here in SW In, I heard a large Boom (like a sonic boom) at about 5am. Also, I live out in the country and every now and then I'll have car drive down the road with their Sub-woofers bumping and it makes me raise an eyebrow until I figgured out what was spooking the hood LOL!

I would be suspect that it was a waterhammer effect inside the piping in the walls. That is if you have copper piping. It has to do with contracting water and air and changes in temp and air pressure, had it happen in a home before. Will scare the stink off ya in a hurry.
