I just picked up a S&W 686 and intend to reload using hard cast lead. I was planning on slugging the bore until I found out that they use an odd number of groves which requires a special tool to measure. Has anyone dealt with this issue before? Can anyone recommend a gunsmith that is able to deal with it in the indy area?

slug the throats of the cylinders , size 1-2 thou over that . The slug is being sized as it goes through the cylinder . As long as the bore is not bigger than the throats it will shoot cast fine . If the bore is larger than throats you will have to have them opened up to get the best acuracy out of cast
