MUNCIE -- A gun that a kindergartner brought to Grissom Elementary School this morning had been thrown away by his parent and was in pieces, police said.A security officer at the school called 911 at 11:38 a.m. Thursday to report that the boy had brought a gun to school. Ana Pichardo-Delk, communications director for Muncie Community Schools, confirmed that a kindergartner brought an inoperable gun to school this morning. The student showed it to another student, and that student then told a faculty member about the gun, which was not loaded and not functioning correctly.
The faculty member took possession of the gun, and police and Child Protective Services were called to the school.
Muncie police will send the case to the prosecutor’s office for review regarding any criminal charges, said Det. Lt. Steve Cox.
The gun had been thrown away by the boy’s parent.
“We’re pretty confident she didn’t know he had it,” Cox said. “It had been thrown away. He picked it out of the trash. It was in pieces and was not functioning.”
The gun had been taken apart before it was thrown in the trash.
"We’re still in the middle of the investigation,” Cox told The Star Press.
The hand gun was a semi-automatic.

Not sure why the teacher that took possession could not just throw it out.
