Recently got a new Glock 17 and am wanting to use it as a nightstand gun....

Having never had an accessory rail before I am looking to mount a flashlight to the rail. Any recommendations on brand, model, fit, finish, function. I only want to buy this once and don't want to be sitting back going "Damn wish I had gotten that one."

So please help a brother out and let me know what you all think??

crimson trace is coming out with (or just released??) a very cool light that mounts on the actual trigger guard - tailored specifically to a full size glock frame. This is good because it's self-contained and NOT bulky at all. They also make them for most other popular manufacturers & sizes. This is compatible with their lasergrips also. These are both great products because there are no on/off switches, buttons or levers. When you grip the gun, it activates it. Poke around online and you can find significant discounts - or support your local stores and find a competitive price on it. (cals sporting armory online was good a couple months back, sometimes even amazon)

    LTG-736 for GLOCK Full-Size

    I hope that helps.

We've started seeing our TLR-1 lights break after a couple of years use (probably 6000-8000 rounds on them).

I've been running Surefires for years. Bought the X200 as soon as it hit the market and used it until the X300 came out and upgraded. Add a SL switch (if you can find one) or a DG switch and you have single handed operation without dedicating your trigger finger to anything but trigger duty.

I bought the gtl10 glock lite. It was only 95 bucks, same finish, polymer & looks seamless with pistol.I'm sure it'll b more than durable enuff to perform nightstand duties. It has ambi flash&on switches.....my .02

I activate mine with my support hand, But I can see the advantage of that switch.

Is that on .40 caliber guns mostly?

Yes and as far as I know the broken lights were on SWAT pistols which see considerably more use than others. I'm not knocking the TLR-1 lights, for the money they are a good quality light and light years better than the Insight M3.
