    I'm working on putting together my dream coyote gun, a 20" AR in .223.

    A year or so ago it would have been stellar. Now picking a different cartridge may be to your advantage, so that you can actually get your hands on it. 22-250 and .270 are good alternatives. I think .17 HMR is a little light, but that's just me.

    I've got a friend who is looking for a good coyote gun for less than $750 with optics. I'm going to have to look over all of these responses and see what he says.
    $750 should be feasible, provided he doesn't want high power optics and a heavy barrel, varmint edition rifle.

    I went with a used 700 ADL and a used Leupold, both like new. Saved me some coin, bought in the "off season" too. Shoots OK, factory stock sucked (synth). Have maybe 25 bucks in epoxy and paint getting it usable.

    I do not see many people talking about .22 magnum. My neighbor loves his scoped Marlin bolt action .22 magnum; Loves it alot and claims it dispatches coyotes quickly and humanely.
