I have a Remington 597 and love that gun. It's crazy accurate and shoots so darn fast. That being said, I was planning on buying a 10/22 but found the Remington for $180 bucks, so I couldn't turn it down. 10/22 has some pretty crazy aftermarket stocks, triggers, magazines, barrels, etc. So you might spend a few more bucks (with the 10/22), but there's a lot of stuff you can do with it if you eventually get bored with the basics. Either way, you're going to have a blast with a rimfire.

I bought the Remington 597 Combo with scope for $200 at GM. Great rifle.

Just bought my 3rd 22 rifle. First was used Winchester mode 77. Bought it from a table at the Indy 1500. Beautiful gun with nice real wood stock and scope. $275. Unfortunately it will not feed ammo. I have worked like crazy to fix that but no luck. Then I bought a used 10/22. Works like a clock. Never jams. Love it and it drives tacks. $270 Then decided I wanted another new one so bought a Mannlicher style. Cool looking gun. $379. There are many different looking new guns available. Go to Rugar's web site... bet there are 24 different looking 10/22 models.

I am sure there are some reliable 22 rifles out there but I gambled on the Winchester and lost. I still have it but can't use it. With the Ruger 10/22 there are hundreds of modifications you can do to it. Go looking on Brownells and Midway's web sites and you will not believe what they have come up with for that rifle. Good luck and have fun !

I really enjoy the GSG-5 as well as AR style .22's. 10-22's just don't have the appeal to them that I prefer, but they are excellent shooters. It's really whatever you desire the most.

I am new to guns so far I only have pistols, but I am ready to buy a fun .22LR. I want something fun, preferably a semi auto what's some good fun options?

I picked up one of these a few weeks ago:

COLT M4 CARBINE | Walther Arms

It's made by Walther but marketed by UMAREX in the USA and has a Colt brand on it. But in spite of all that, it looks, feels, and acts like an M4 except in .22 LR. I considered the S&W M&P 15-22 but it is all plastic. This is all metal except for the stock and handguard. I like it!

Bought a Ruger 10/22 last summer for my son and I. Do not have a single bad thing to say about it, it has been flawless. Because of the amount of aftermarket stuff, if down the road you did find something you didn't like, it's really easy to change. And as you can see from some of other threads on here, Ruger stands behind their products and provides good customer service too.

Im with almost everyone in here, 10/22 or s&w 15-22. I honestly perfer the 15-22, just for the simplicity of the takedown and never had a problem with it. Although, the 10-22 has endless possibilities as far as what you can do with them. Cant go wrong with either one.

What's a good price for a plain jane 10/22? I've seen them in the FS threads but they are all over the map. It looks like Wal Mart carries them but I can't see which particular stores DO carry them.

Ruger 10/22 or Marlin Model 60 for Semi Auto. Marlin XT-22 if you want Bolt action or a Henry for lever action. Cant go wrong with any of those I just mentioned

I am going with the M&P 15-22 since it allows me to use a lot of the AR accessories I already have. If you have an AR already the 15-22 is nice because it mimics the AR very closely in most aspects and nearly all the rail mount stuff for ARs will work on the Smith as well as AR stocks, grips, and muzzle devices.

To me the 10/22 is like the honda civic of the rimfire world. Everyone wants one to tune the living daylights out of and make their own with all sorts of mods. Thats fun if you want to go that route too.

Ruger 10/22...a rifle that's fun to shoot, reliable and accurate right out of the box and a rifle you can make all your own with all the accessories and options out there.

My first rifle was a 10/22. I bought it back in the 80's. I have put 10-15 thousand rounds through it. It still shoots like it did back in the 80's. If I was going to buy another semi auto .22...I would buy ummm...a 10/22.
