On a serious note, it's going to be hard to find something that is reliable, cheap and not a Glock. A Kahr is going to be your best bet.

You didn't just say that out loud did you?

Absolutely ... and it needs to be repeated often.

The reason is that so many people seem intent on pushing lightweight j-frames onto women for a carry gun. That includes gun shop sales people and well-intentioned husbands and boyfriends.

If they're not the worst choice for a novice shooter, they're in the top 5. I understand the "she won't carry anything else, so we don't have any choice" thing, but it's just not a good idea.

I agree, the 642 is a jarring experience in terms of shooting, +P or not...

I just wanted to be one that started another Glock thread.

Actually, I've looked at the 26, are there alternatives to a 26 in the sub compact department?

    Kahr seems just too expensive,
Kel Tec, I don't want to work on something to get it to run

What other brands are there that a quality for a decent price AND dependable?
The Hi Point C-9 is a nice reliable weapon, but it is inexpensive and the gun snobs will laugh at you.

I think the G26 makes a great carry gun, but I opted for the Kahr PM9 for my everyday carry. It really disappears and is very lightweight. Yes, pricey, but I was lucky to find mine hardly used at a great price. I also have a S&W 642 for those days I want to just pocket it and go.

    I believe the OP inquired after quality weapons . . . .

    (sorry, couldn't resist).

In all honesty, though, H/P's are fine plinkers and fun for that purpose, but you ought to think long and hard before trusting your life to one.
