Hmmmmmmm maybe someone is misunderstanding the purpose of an actual "flash mob"?

"A flash mob (or flashmob)[1] is a group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual and sometimes seemingly pointless act for a brief time, then disperse, often for the purposes of entertainment and/or satire."

^^This^^ What was described in that article isn't what I understand a flash mob to be, that actually seems much much worse (though it's still somewhat hard to imagine something worse than a bunch of generally white people dancing in public, lol). I hadn't heard of this type of mob thing before now though either.

This started as mobs of teenagers gathering at high end downtown Chicago stores, grabbing merchandise and fleeing. It has now taken a more violent turn, to the point that people who live in the downtown Chicago area are becoming afraid to walk in this area. Some of these attacks have actually happened in the daylight hours, but most are happening at night. There have been some arrests, but until yesterday there had been no additional deployment of police in the downtown area. I have been watching this situation closely, as I often work in the downtown area.

I've never thought about getting mobbed like that. Maybe I should start carrying that extra mag?

Not sure carrying extra mags is gooing to help you. If 20 people "roll on you" at the beach like in this example you may not even have the chance to pull out a firearm. Or you might but only be able to get some shots before the disband back into the public with will also be running away from you (ie. crazy person with gun) since most people will not have seen/understand that a mob was attacking you.

The article in the Illinois State Rifle Association website.

    Incredible....

I read on that website that it looks like the few pro-gun bills that IL was working on have died in the legisation as well. :faint:

No, they get it. It's just that in Chicago, the pointless act which is done for entertainment is to attack people.

These incidents of "urban youth" (a/k/a: Black people in their mid-teens to early 20s, usually from lower income areas) have spiked over the last year or so. In some cases, media doesn't discuss the racial aspect, as the r-word (racist) is a bad, bad thing to be labeled.

Anyways, some of these incidents were found to be organized via word-of-mouth via electronic media (MySpace, Facebook, Twitter), so they were given the same name as those gatherings which don't result in massive police response, crimes, etc.: Flash mobs. I wonder if the media is using the term "flash mob" because they don't want to discuss the racial aspect of these incidents?

Anyways, the cops in Chicago are bending over laughing at Rahm and their new police chief/commissioner. They absolutely refuse to discuss any aspect of the racial angle. They had to close one city beach on Memorial Day. The official word that they refuse to budge from is that they had to close the beach due to heat. So now, on a populare Chicago Police Officer blog, the rank and file are going nuts with this concept. Items get posted and the comments are filed with things like "It must be the heat." "We need to ban heat."

The blog is called Second City Cop. While I don't take everything on this blog as 100% factual (they even admit they get some things wrong), I believe the stuff I read there more than I do the mainstream media in Chicago. Second City Cop

Wow. This is scary. If you have ever wanted a reason to carry a full size, higher capacity handgun with several spare magazines, here is your reason. If your going into an urban area and its legal to carry there, I would do it from now on. A gun could make all the difference for you if you ever were targeted by a group like that.

You know what? The IL. government deserves to feel the heat from this "flash mob" nonsense because they refuse to take the initiative in allowing citizens the privilege of their 2nd amendment rights (in an expedient and hassle free manner)!!! This PISSES ME OFF. You would think that a metropolis would be proactive and supportive of citizens arming themselves. This is very dissapointing. Joshua

If you are in Chicago and knowing the Draconian laws that exist there, what would you do?

The reason I toss this out is a friend I have known for years who lives around Michigan Ave called and we talked about this, I suggested mace as about his only lawful option, not even sure about that actually. Then I suggested he and his wife move to Indy. No way I would try to raise a family in downtown Chicago. He agreed but probably isn't going to move.

Any other suggestions from the group? All are welcome as I am kind of at a loss as to what other options are out there...all my suggestion are of a "caliber" not suited to the Chicagoland area.

I was born and raised in Chicago but left many years ago. imo other than the attractions like the Art Institute, and museums, there isn't much there. I'm not into sports, and spending $100 plus at a restaurant doesn't excite me. If I could do it again, I would have left Illinois long ago. The opportunity was there, but family ties kept me there. Now living in Indiana and wish I moved here long ago. With the Illinois voters consistently re-electing criminal socialist liberal politicians, they are insuring the status quo there.

Not living in Chicago but rural 75 miles south.

3-4 years ago I took Wife and kids 12 and 9 years old to the museums. Parked car at Metro stop and rode the train in. On the way back home we got on the incorrect train. Our train was due 2 minutes after this one. Anyway, this one goes SE toward Pullman area? Anyway it's toward dusk and the scene is getting more urban. I honestly didn't know if the train was going to stay there or turn around go back or what the hell. I'm fairly savvy for a farm boy. The Mrs. and I used to go to Chicago quite a bit. But this is the first time I had felt TERROR for my family, simply because I got on a train 2 minutes early. (I compare this to perhaps taking the wrong train and going NW...would I have had the same feelings?)

Anyway, the conductor came over and talked to us and said the train was going to turn back and he'd personally make sure we got on the correct train south. All was well.

I refuse to go back to Chicago. Their sales taxes are the highest in the nation. Their stance on self defense is abysmal. the hand is on the doorknob to leave the state.

Only 20,000 votes would have put Bill Brady in as givernor and started the turn around. I can no longer wait for this ship to be righted.

BTW: If I'm forced to go to Chicago again, I'm packing. Too much at stake. Call it civil disobedience.
