I would go with a Remington 700 SPS, its a fine gun you could pass down to kids or grandkids. In 308 cal the ammo is prevelent and could be used for other game. The ballistics are excellent.

Caliber: .260 Rem, 7mm-08, 6.5x55 Swede, .257 Roberts would top my list for a "deer" rifle. .243 only if I couldn't handle the recoil. If I thought I might use it for more than one purpose (hunting larger game, or hunting deer further than 300 yards) I'd go straight to the 7mm-08 or consider a .308 or 30-06.

Rifle: Stevens 200, Savage Edge, or Marlin XS7 or XL7 (none come in .260 or .257 Roberts, so I'll add .25-06 to the caliber list).

Optics: the new Redfield 3-9x40mm scopes are $150 and are very nice for the money.

I would see what fits you best and then use the input above to determine the caliber. You don't want any gun that doesn't shoulder well.

I'd get me a Model 94 Winchester in 30/30. No need to take 500 yard shots. I really wish i could use one here in indiana.

It all boils down to shot placement=if you are going to shoot short ranges-go with a 30-30=if the range is going to be long shots-go with the .243,.270 or 30-06 as was suggested by the other people.
