These are the results I got with the Elmer's paint sticks... I used essentially the same method as don. Painted over a large area then used alcohol to wipe off the excess.

Lacquer stick is the way to go for long term durability, however crayon is just as good for low heat parts of the gun or as a test to see what colors you want to use. Neither way is really the right way. They both have their pros and cons. Now I just need to figure out what I want to fill in.

I used the folkart outdoor opaque craft paint from wally for about 2 bucks. I have red on my xd .40 and blue on my wifes xd 9. Both look good.

You think it'll work the same way on stainless stell?
Yes, all your doing is shoving crayon down into the roll marks and it fills in the holes. Nothing with it is permanent, a lil gun scrubber or brake clean can remove the crayon if it does not work.

Hey, this helps a lot! I was thinking of Duracoating a Taurus PT1911, and Taurus highlights their roll marks in yellow on the black gun. I was wanting to keep the yellow, but I knew the Duracoat would fill in some of the roll marks and cover the yellow. So, I was trying to think of a way to cover or fill the roll marks. The crayon idea will work great, because I can use a heat gun to melt the wax after I'm done with the coating.

A very late +1 for the original poster!

I have used the Lacquer Stik on Glock magazines with great success. Very durable.
I have not used the below listed products but they look promising and are under $20.00. Gold is a little classier than white and the second one comes in silver also.

i used testors model paint to do my guns with i thought about using crayons to do so but then thought about the heat and my ar laying on a bench in the hot summers sun and figured the crayon would melt away.

    Don's house-o-color!

Never thought of that. On a side note it would be a great way
anyhow of seeing what colors look the best to you. Don't like
the lime green as much as you thought, try red.
