Fear for Obama's Safety Grows as Hate Groups Thrive on Racial Backlash

Violent Signs, Gun, Standoff Latest in Emerging Anger Towards the President

By BRIAN ROSS, ANNA SCHECTER and MEGAN CHUCHMACH
    August 14, 2009

Experts who track hate groups across the U.S. are growing increasingly concerned over violent rhetoric targeted at President Obama, especially as the debate over health care intensifies and a pattern of threats emerges

The Secret Service is investigating a Maryland man who held a sign reading "Death to Obama" and "Death to Michelle and her two stupid kids" outside a town hall meeting this week. And in New Hampshire, another man stood across the street from a Presidential town hall with his gun on full display. Los Angeles police officers apprehended a man Thursday after a standoff with him inside a red Volkswagen Bug car in Westwood, CA – the latest disturbing case even though officials said the man had mental problems.

"I don't think these are simply people who are mentally ill or off their rocker," Mark Potok, director of the Intelligence Project at the Southern Poverty Law Center, told ABC News of those behind the threats. "In a very real sense they represent a genuine reaction, a genuine backlash against Obama."

Experts say a sharp growth in so-called militia groups that helped spawn a wave of domestic terrorism in the 1990s – and are now using YouTube, rock music and the Internet to recruit members and spread hate and fear - shouldn't be ignored.

It's certainly a scary time," said former FBI agent Brad Garrett, now an ABC News consultant. Garrett said the Secret Service "cannot afford to pass on anyone," and he believes "they really do fear that something could happen to [Obama]."

Garrett said statements like one recently made by controversial radio host Rush Limbaugh comparing a logo for the White House plan to a Nazi symbol "legitimizes people who are on the edge to go do something or say something."

"And if you go and take a look at this, you will find that the Obama health care logo is damn close to a Nazi swastika logo," Limbaugh said.

Later, someone painted a swastika outside the office of Congressman David Scott of Georgia, one of Obama's supporters.

Contentious health care debate heightens concerns for Obama's safety.

    Secret Service Security Around Obama

While officials told ABC News that the President's daily threat matrix has yet to reflect a sharp increase in threats, White House officials privately admit deep concern and have told the Secret Service to keep security tight, even if Obama objects.

"I think the president has, in effect, triggered fears amongst fairly large numbers of white people in this country that they are somehow losing their country, that the battle is lost," Potok told ABC News. "The nation that their Christian white forefathers created has somehow been taken from them."

We boycott ABC at my house. I suggest every one do the same. This article is so ridiculous, so facetious, its disgusting.

This is White House Propaganda. Saul Alinsky stuff. They are trying to demonize the dissenters. They did the same thing in 1930s in Italy, Germany and USSR.

The key is to not back down. Just keep telling your neighbors, coworkers, friends and family about the Socialists' plan to destroy what remains of the America that we love. Do not allow them to isolate you. Let people know. Send e-mails to everyone. Do not be afraid. Fear is what empowers the bullies. The truth will set us free. Let people know that we can restore the Republic, and proclaim Liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants.

I heard the other day that the new "N" word is Socialist. So according to the mainstream media, if you are against socialism you are by definition a racist. I wonder if they realize how crazy they are beginning to sound.

    Here is my :twocents:!
I not racist or hateful in anyway, want the best for this country. Hell, I protected it for 8yrs.
However, this is going to turn into another civil war, but this time it wont be the North vs. the South. It will be Black vs White!
Can you see what impact this could have if a "White" extremist group actually got away with assasinating the 1st Black President?

This would literally destroy our nation, the end. Now I'm not a big political advicate, I try to stay away as much as possible, I have stopped watching the news just because of all the negative-
For once I would love to see something positive happening, but it seems far from likely.
Its just sad to see this great nation falling to ruins, I have no idea if this is something that will cause great hatred or turn around to triumph, but it does make me think alot about my family and their future.

I hope this is just a stepping stone...:dunno:

This is wrong. I hope they DO charge him. That goes beyond 1st Amendment in every provision.

    But this....

And in New Hampshire, another man stood across the street from a Presidential town hall with his gun on full display.

Is absolutely ridiculous. It is going to be used as a standing point for gun control Watch. Who wants to take bets?

Uh, what? Since when was R&R bad? Oh wait... the 20's. I forgot. Well if anyone here's any Recruiting through rock and roll, let me know. I'd LOVE to hear how bad the song sucks when they sing "Join us to put down the dumbarse in Washington!"

Mark Potok isn't a credible source. He's been trying to gin this sort of thing up for a some time.

The second page of the article admits the President's threat matrix has not changed significantly.

Therefore, I see it as a media tactic to divert from the issues at hand and paint those opposing Obama's IDEAS as something they are not (if not manufacture something completely out of thin air).

They have no other way to respond. They cannot, must not, actually discuss what's in the so-called "health care" bill, because they cannot win that argument in the court of public opinion.

Like I said I do not follow this closely, and maybe I should but my biggest fear is the future, especially for my children.

Was talking to an old German friend the other day. When I say old German, I mean old EAST German. He was a German citizen BEFORE the wall went up, and lived in East Germany until the wall came down (thankyou Ronald Reagan). He said that in the 70's, he spoke out against the East German government, and was turned in. A week later, a black car pulls up in front of his apartment and the Stazi (East German Secret Police) took him away. He spent one and a half years in jail for voicing an OPPOSING OPINION. This friend said that it seems like OBAMA is starting to form his version of the Stazi.

Absolutely. Although I do follow this a little too closely, my fears are becoming reality.

My mind control device now sits in the corner, dark and neglected, unless we want to watch a DVD.

Kill the feed, it is all propaganda and if not from political parties, it's from ilk that wants controll of your mind and wallet.

Mark Potock and intelligence should not be used in the same sentence. His Southern Poverty Law Center has been a clearinghouse for every socialist and leftist boogeyman ginned up issue for years. I didn't see it posted here, but he's convinced he's "marked for death" by multiple "militias" because of his "speaking out", and his idea of looming "white on black" violence because of the President's genealogy is nothing but pure race-baiting and an obvious attempt to provide a distraction to what Congress and the President are actually up to.

The liberals cannot win with ideas. To win, they demonize their oppinents. If anyone is against the Obama agenda he MUST be a racist nazi assassin. Or so they say...

That is why they manitain that NO ONE could possibly have an opposing opinion that is based on reason or logic. If you oppose a liberal it must be because you are racist, hate-filled, etc.
