well, when it gets to emotions, and emotional arguments, like, think of the children, then i point out, i am thinking of them, being able to protect them instead of watching them get killed by a mad man who will kill them just because. More people have been saved with firearms then vise versa.

Don't be too sure. At the time of the writing of the Bill of Rights, the ownership of a horse wasn't enumerated either.

You are right. On his track of thinking, 9th Amend is one possible source - which has been discussed. So is Roe .v Wade line of cases.

Ask them how many "reasonable restrictions" they want on the amendments they like.

Say.... the 1st Amendment & free speech:

I once asked my sister who equates guns with violence and doesn't like violence...
So if a man broke into your house and was planning some evil deed upon your person, and right next to you was Grandma's razor sharp old butcher knife, what would you do?
Well, she thought about it...looked a bit confused...and said "I guess I would have to stab the SOB." I replied. "Correct, you'd dang sure grab that blade...it's called self preservation, the will to survive, self defense, a God given instinct and a Constitutional Right...and my "ugly" .44 special makes one heck of a butcher knife." She has remained silent on the issue since then.

I usually resort to the most childish and basest form of the Socratic method effort I can find. I ask "Why?" And I ask it repeatedly.

Where the conversation goes from there depends on how rational the other party wants to be in the discussion.

Generally, I just ask them why they advocate for the curtailment of their inividual liberties.... and go from there.

If they give you that BS line about how "that's what the police are for," remind (or inform) that the police have no obligation to protect individual citizens. Courts have upheld this. Also, that attacks are generally done in under a minute. Can you wait 15 for police to arrive? The police are there to clean up your mess and take reports. You should be responsible for your own life. More of this nanny state BS. Can't do anything for themselves. If you would rather be raped, beaten and murdered than use a firearm in self defense, FINE. But don't you DARE tell me that I can't.

Get your F***ING government the F*** out of my F***ING life, GOD******!

Government can F*** the living s*** out of anything it gets its hands on. They're like King Midas, but with s***.

Can we make a list of government's achievements?

Post your favorite analogy for how wrong the gun control argument is or good "comebacks" when debating an anti.

My personal favorite, when discussing high capacity magazines or "assault rifles" and their necessity for the average joe is to ask the person if they have a digital camera. More than likely they own one. Ask how many pictures the memory card stores. The answer will likely be in the hundreds. Respond with "would it be fair to ban digital cameras and high capacity memory cards because child pornographers use them to commit their crimes?"

In short, "if guns kill people, then cameras cause child pornography."

There's not much debate left in them after that...it is a perfect analogy.

Mine is: If guns kill people, then spoons are responsible for making Michael Moore fat.

ME: Did you hear about that story on the news about those 2 girls who where raped in a back ally?
    Dirty lib: No, what happened
ME: One is dead, she was raped then her throat was slit
Dirty lib: O no what happened to the other?
    ME: She shot the guy
    Dirty lib:.......

ME: So what were you saying about gun control?

The only problem with that analogy is, that most liberals would consider the female that shot the rapist, to be more evil than the rapist.

Read the first page, only got a couple comments in and stopped at Bartmans entry. Ok I've
Skipped way ahead so I hope this isn't redundant.
Bartman was on a motorcycle blog arguing about the right/need for assault weapons.
Can anyone really argue the necessity of owning a motorcycle. Hey, I used to ride and it is fun and
Cheap. But no one can seriously argue that they are safe or necessary or that the govt. can't ban
    them...
How can you justify forcing people to wear seatbelts but still a llow motorcycles on the road?
Why is it legal to sell a bike that can hit 180 MPH on roads with top speeds of 70...
I haven't read anything in the bill of rights that allows motorcycles at all.
Sometimes you gotta hit them where they live...

I read an article about how a woman was on trial for murder because she shot a would-be rapist/murder/evil-dooer...what a society

One has to wonder if the outcome would have been different in Greenwood a few nights ago, if that woman had kept a loaded handgun within easy reach somewhere close. That POS who attacked her should be the poster boy for gun control. The "take a firm grip, line up your sights, and squeeze" type of gun control.

God, give her strength during this ordeal.
