I would cruise the classifieds and buy a 10/22. You should be able to get one in your price range no problem. Heck you can find a nice wood stock 10/22 brand new for $220. And go with the .22. I have a Savage .17 and love it but you can shoot a .22 all day for what a box of .17 costs.

I just got a Savage 93 17hmr and I love it. picked it up for $230 and put a 3-16 utg scope on it from cheaper than dirt. It hold .5 in groups at 100yds and 1-1.5 at 200yds, i can hit pop cans at 250yds easy. I think this would be a great training rife that can shoot long ranges a your skills improve. On the flip side, I have a 10/22 that can go through a brick of 500 in a weekend. about 25 bucks gets you 100 17HMR or 500 22LR.

I second the Remingtons... 597 semi auto or Model 5 bolt.

The 597 box stock is more accurate than a 10/22 without enhancements in most cases. The Model 5 is the Zastava made bolt gun. I just had my Charles Daly version out today. It loves American Eagle ammo and it is really accurate.

Or.... Marlin 795.. Had mine out today as well... Wonderfully accurate and dirt cheap.

I have a savage 17HMR and I love it. It does cost a bit more, but IMHO it's well worth it. It's way more destructive than a .22 and has a flatter trajectory. If you get a heavy barrel rifle you will not be disappointed. They are disgustingly accurate and a complete blast to shoot.

We're talking $9.99 for a box of 50 cartridges. All my .22's collect dust now. I don't care that it costs a little more.

Pls tell me where you are finding .17hmr ammo for $9.99.

For cheap plinking and a gun you can accessorize the hell out of, the Ruger 10/22 is very tough to beat.

If you are looking for more power, save a bit longer and get a .223

Personally, I think the 10/22 with a heavy barrel and thumbhole stock is a great looking piece of art that shoots good too.

I would go with the .17 HMR. A lot of fun and very accurate at distance. The ammo can be found reasonably if you look. I get it for a lot less than .223.

If your not set on a bolt action then a 10-22 is hard to beat. Not to mention you can pick one up at Wal-Mart for under a $200
