Farmers are raking in the cash right now, so they can buy their own crop insurance. This is the time to end subsidies.

Good. Federal manipulation of food prices to make them artificially high is one of the dumbest ideas in the history of man.

The old plan stuck it to us twice. We got taxed to subsidize farmers, and we also got to pay higher prices. brilliant...

Ok, as a small farmer I can assure you I want the government out of my business period, all of it. Why do people fall for the propaganda that farmers are prospering from a government program that regulates them? The farm bill is and has been about food stamps and farm commodities used as a "pawn" in global affairs. The Idea that farmers have gotten rich from subsidies is as absurd as saying people get rich at casinos. Anyone who thinks otherwise, I challenge you to turn over the price control and marketing of the goods or services that your business produces to the government in exchange for a subsidy and the right to do with the goods and services as they see fit.

The small guys aren't getting rich off of farm subsidies but the gig farmers are. When you see a farmer driving Cadillacs and new trucks every few years, talking about their lake houses, etc, go online and find out how much subsidy money they're getting.

The farm bill was initially about raising the price of food so that farmers could remain solvent.

During the depression, currency deflation made it nearly impossible to make money as a farmer, and the country was swiftly shifting to subsistence farming.

Good, bad, or indifferent, we'll never know.

So, good old FDR stepped in and began to regulate food prices and production in order to make farming profitable. Which included payments for fallow fields, and "surplus" livestock.

Now, much of that was repealed, but some still carried through. In addition, they added "food stamps" to it for some reason.

So, in conclusion, it's a lose-lose for everyone except the government employee making north of $75k to shuffle the papers around.

:+1: The more the government said they were helping the small family farm the faster they disappeared. The only farmers to gain from the subsidies are the crooked ones. The more regulations the government implemented to restrict "mega farms" from subsidies the more money they received.

Yes you are correct. But the ones getting rich are not the farmers, this I can almost guarantee you. Unless you think a dogs hind leg is straight.

Huh. There's a farmer in my county that's received over $450k in 16 years. He was also a county commisioner for awhile. I believe he also has a lake house. He's definitely far from poor.

We complain all the time about welfare recipients having luxuries. If farmers are so destitute that they require subsidies to survive, don't you think they should forgo luxuries if they need the subsidies to survive?

It is sort of strange that a lot of the farmers that I see that are "struggling" have brand spankin new cars, nicer than I'll ever have and you see their teenage kids driving around in 60K pickups with "farm plates" on them. Seems pretty rediculous to me!

    Better late than never.
The farmers were really struggling to make it for many years. Many of them didn't and the farms got eaten by the big outfits. But now with the inflated prices due to ethanol, soy diesel, increased exports, etc., it is a good time to do it.

A great dale of OUR money has improperly changed hands in the name of farm subsidies, but i believe you will find that the majority of the money went to 'farmers' surnamed 'Corporation'. Honestly, arch-elitist Lugar was one of the primary architects of farm subsidies for years and we all know how he rolls.
