Best bet is to desensitize them to the novelty young. I have a 12 gauge leaning in the corner for this reason. Kids don't even touch it. Should probably also say that all the ammo is locked up for it, and the defensive guns are on our hip or in a quick access safe.
This is why I OC a lot home. My kids are still young (2 and 4). But if it's not special, than it's not cool. I never give it a second glance while everyone's awake. It's just a tool on Dad's belt. And I'm quick to get on my son if he even acts like he's shooting someone, with Legos or whatever.
