Does anybody know if it's common for former military and former police to carry? I have four in-laws and several friends who are former military and they do not carry. I don't understand how someone can see the worst of the world we live in and not want to protect themselves 24-7.

Well, I'm former military and former police and I carry so that's 100% so far. :D
I would say it's common for most retired police to carry and unless the former military is licensed not so common. JMO

I spent over 21 years in the military and have served as a firearms trainer so let me just say what I have seen over the years. There is a misconception that most of the military members are gun savy. This is less and less the case. While there are some individual members that take their training serious most sadly are lost on the firing line. My generation grew up watching Howdy Doody, Leave it to Beaver and Andy Griffith reruns. The new generation grew up on Bevis and Butthead or Ren and Stempy. and you can tell. Military is just a reflection of society. Just like on the street you have some squared away individuals and some not so squared away. Police agencies work the same way. We all know those few that got hired because they fit a certian mold or tested well (on paper) but are absolutly clueless on common sense issues.

Most military members perform support functions (career fields) while they are in. So the usually do not decide to "carry" when they leave the military. I have generally seen a large number of military police types not carry after they become civillians. Some people are just not into it or just don't think about it. like everything it comes down to the person but alot more former military than you think decide not to carry!

Yes, I wholeheartedly agree, the more things change, the worse things become... I blame the schools, and the parents, a bunch of spineless, limp wristed, gun hating people everwhere... HOW can they possibly go fight, when they hate what they are carring into battle.....

I'm fromer U.S.Army and I carry, does that help? But really I would say no, most don't. I know a lot of former military who don't carry, as far as former police I couldn't tell you one way or another.

Nowadays, every walk under the sun is signing up for the military. Most of them come off as uneducated (gun-wise) and know nothing of the firearms they use to protect themselves and this country. My brother is in an infantry unit out of IL and just got back from Afghannyland last August. His stories make me understand why we don't kill more of the people that shoot at us.

I was an MP in the Marine Corps. The main problem is that when I was in (early 90's) you were only allowed to carry on duty and if your job required it. All weapons on base were stored in the armory (even personal ones, though you could have one in married base housing) and checked out for use. I have had my LTCH since I got out, though I don't carry around Bloomington much though, that may be changing. I carried daily when I lived in Indy, and I still do if I leave town at all.

Congratulations on stereotyping an entire generation based of nothing other than what you think you know about it. You didn't state that you had kids or not, if you do, did they grow up on Ren & STIMPY* or BEAVIS and Butthead*? You're just like the old ladies that are afraid to even look at me or let me hold a door for them.

Stop generalizing an entire generation based off what's either around you or what you believe is going on in the Military. I am 23 years old, Ex Army 31B with 2 boys and a wife. I grew up on self-discipline since my loser father from YOUR generation is and was nothing but a douchebag retired NYPD bent on power.

I am not the exception of my generation because there are many other like me, disgusted by the stereotype we face on a day to day basis from everyone. Let's get something straight on the Military, blame your government for the current state of the Military. Almost FORCING people to enlist as a last resort, giving them the option instead of going to jail or juvenile detention.

I watched Beavis and Butthead as a kid, I also watch Family Guy everyday and have not missed an episode. I am loyal and I have humility, I am a father and a damned good one in my own opinion. You're judging people based of the TV shows that they watch lol..Every generation has it's faults, including 25% of the prison population littered with folk from your own generation.

I also happen to enjoy the History channel, Military channel, Animal planet and porn..any other nonsense you'd like to spew about this generation? With all due respect anyway, Seargent.

Former Air Force and I carry most of the time. Of course I was around guns way before I enlisted. Many of the people I served with had not seen a gun let alone shot one before they joined. Our Basic training only had a few days of firearm training and that was it. Then at my 2 year mark I requalified on a CATS system as did many. Then at my 4 year mark we did live fire. Air Force does not spend much time with firearms. My wife is still serving in the Air Force and has been in for almost five years but hasn't shot her weapon since Basic. It really isn't a huge part of the training so it's no wonder they don't carry.

    Indy urban west.
Grew up with shotguns mostly. Lots of small game hunting(especially in the late 50's and early 60's after the family business went belly up). Slept with a 1911 and either a AR or AK for nearly 2 years in Nam.And yes I still carry. :)

My brother-in law is former MP and all that he carries is a knife. I think his 2 tours in Iraq, and garrison duty for 2 yrs in Korea kinda put a kink in his wanting to carry a firearm.

Relax a little bit bro.........it was his opinion and he is allowed to have it, just like there are people on INGO that lump me into a general group just because I'm a cop. It's the interwebz............don't take it so serious.

Like many of you, I am former military and also carry daily. My dad was a former LEO but did not carry. He was certainly not anti-gun -- he was a hunter and skeet shooter, qualified as expert regularly when he was on the force, taught me and my brother to shoot and owned a number of weapons, most of which are now mine. He kept his service 357 in his nightstand until the day he died. He was just uncomfortable with the idea of civilians carrying weapons. He had the typical concerns -- lack of training, questioning whether a civilian would be willing to pull the trigger, etc. He felt most people would end up having the gun taken from them before they would use it.

We were alike in a lot of ways, but on this issue we had to agree to disagree.
