Definitely function. The handguns I have I got for self-defense. I recently got a Kel-Tec P-3AT, and everybody knows they are not nice looking. The plastic looks downright nasty. But, all my family has them, and they are pretty happy with them, they have had no reliability issues. And since I keep it in my pocket, I don't care how it looks. I looked at an LCP too, and they look a lot nicer, but my budget doesn't currently allow for nice looking things.

I guess I like looking at guns about as much as anyone. But when I go to the gunshows, I tend to look longer at those that look nicer (as long as I don't look at the price first). However, I think the effectiveness and reliability is of greater consequence.
