Did some casting

I knew I was getting low on .58 Lee Minies and last time I looked, I didn’t see any .375 cast round balls. I was doing some other stuff out in the garage so I fired up the pot full of pure lead and got these molds warmed up. I had to laugh at the size disparity between these two slugs!

Just out a few on the scale. The .58’s are about 470 gr. and the .375 round balls are right at 80!

Phew those are some BIG boys. Biggest I cast are .530 balls. Fall is coming Im excited to make a little fire and sit down for a few hours casting.

The round balls are much Easier to cast. I have Andes 10lb Lee pot that I keep full of pure lead and recently wired around the thermostat on it so it’s full heat as soon as it’s plugged in. I’ve found that you have to have pure lead pretty hot to get lube grooves and minor skirts to fill out well.

If you add just a bit of tin it will cure your fill out problems.

Yes, I know. My most common used alloy is 20:1 for most of my handgun and low pressure rifle bullets. For muzzle loading, pure lead is the best to use.

Well not really, what is it you think the tin is going to do? Other than fill out the mold better.

A bit of tin does wonders for mold fill out but with the little you need to add, minimal hardness.

Hes locked into his Para-dime, its most likely a waste of time to try to explain it to him. I hesitated with him saying he bypassed the lead pots thermostat.

Tin will also increase the BHN of lead as for every additional 1% of Tin the BHN increases 0.3.
