I've always felt, we in Indiana, were a fairly conservative group of voters. Anyone else notice that our democrat senator does not seem to think for himself. Just continues to blindly vote with his party. Funny, I thought he was suppose to represent the populace! It's shameful, how in the name of liberty, we have allowed the spinless socialists to undermine our way of life. They have accomplished more in the past few years, than the USSR and the rest of the communist block acheived in the decades preceding!!! Now I'm bummed:dunno:. Gonna have to go shoot some targets!:ar15::ar15::laugh:

The political climate has just become so short sited. Its all about how we can make people happy for now through the next election. No one cares about the effects 5 years down the road. They just want to buy votes. So its in politicians best interest to spend more money on entitlement programs, keeping the masses happy, and furthering out debt.

Unfortunately, this is just the way it is.

I don't like it. I was all for shutting it down last time but the R's just do not have command of the narrative and they get all the blame even though the other party refused to budge.

No matter how the government gets shut down, the Republicans take the blame for it. It's just not a fight they can win. In the last shutdown, they agreed to fund the entire budget with the exception of one thing, and they took all the blame and went down in the polls. Standing on principle is fine, until you lose control of House, Senate, and the Presidency.

I remember reading on this forum how "both sides were to blame". So even among people who are closer in ideology, they take a hit when they take a stand on principle.

I wish there was some magic dust that could be spread about to change this but dollar bills, EBT cards, tax credits, subsidies, and emotions are much more powerful than any magic I can come up with. When people are hurting or portrayed as hurting sufficiently, the American public is not going to tolerate it. As we see, at every one of these stinkin' battles, they show enough busniesses closing down, children losing out on their summer vacation trips, etc. and the call for somebody to do something and stop the petty bickering goes up.

    We're screwed.

Does it really matter? The band played on as the Titanic went down. We have hit the iceberg and it's an open bar. Don't forget to tip the musicians on the way out.

You're very witty. No, the Bush administration had its issues but it did not spend us into oblivion and try to dismantle capitalism. Goodbye.

Bush enjoyed a trifecta for a short while and had 1 house of congress for the remainder of his term. Government only grew. You said you wanted to wait until the repubs squander a majority before giving up on them. The repubs have already squandered it. Thus why I assume you were asleep during the Bush years.

There has been Zero, exactly Zero willingness for the out of control executive to negotiate on anything having to do with spending. No one in his party is making any effort to resolve the budget issues and continue to give him 100% support no matter how foolish his demands are. It is almost like the republicans just threw up their hands and said "ok you fool, take all you want and we hope you choke on it...."

I see no solution short of impeachment.

Well stated. AND, somehow I doubt that it will be "women and children first" when this ship goes down.

Can ya'll give me a BIG AMEN!! The bozos have the keys to the kingdom and don't give a crap about us serfs!! They'll hog all the lifeboats when the time comes-----unless of course we'all are able to hang on to our guns to fight our way onto one:ar15:
Suppose that's why they're pushing gun control/ban, so they don't have to worry about their place in the lifeboat:rockwoot:

    There is some magic dust.

It's called, show the american public the person who's working 2 full time jobs and is taxed half to death but lives under the threat or being jailed or shot if they don't put their taxes ahead of their family. Show these people sucking off the system that they are RESPONSIBLE for bringing physical harm to their neighbor. Show them all the people who are jailed or murdered to keep funding coming in to buy the president his next multimillion dollar vacation. Hold them morally responsible for these crimes against their fellow man.

Educate people, that the government has NO money of any kind. That it is their NEIGHBOR who foots the bill for everything that happens, name their neighbor, show them a picture of this person who they've probably ignored for 10+ years, and remind them that they are why their neighbor lives in poverty.

Publicly shame and humiliate them every time you see them for the moral-less animals that they are.

It's hard to figure out if it's misguided tolerance or apathy at this point. Being poor is a choice unless it's a result of taxation, yet no one seems to understand this.

Yeah but for every one of "you" trying to educate, there's an army showing sympathetic stories of misery, gloom, and despair all caused by the evil republicans that want to balance the budget on the little guys' backs. There are folks doing what you call for; some have some of the largest radio audiences in the country. Look how they're maligned and ridiculed. But I think you're on the right track, it's a cultural shift that's going to have to happen.

This isn't authorizing more spending, just agreeing to pay for what they've already authorized to spend. If ya don't wanna raise the debt ceiling, don't agree to overspend in the first place. Threatening to not raise the debt ceiling is entirely the wrong place to take a stand. At least that's my understanding.

    This.

You decide to eat at a restaurant.
You decide to pay with a credit card.

Raising the debt ceiling = paying the credit card. Not raising the debt ceiling = not paying the credit card. Neither = saving money. Saving money would have been not eating out in the first place. Paying cash would have eliminated the decision to pay or not pay the credit card.

Raising the debt ceiling is like a spendaholic opening yet another line of credit. So a better analogy would be that the irresponsible parent keeps opening new lines of credit to keep buying "free" lunches for half the town, in perpetuity. The bill then gets passed to the kids who had nothing to do with it.

The spending needs to be halted by any means necessary, at any point possible.

So if tax revenues turn out to be zero, the government should just embark on a borrowing spree to fully pay for all the stuff it has approved?

If that's the case why don't we just stop the whole taxing process and save the billions of dollars needed to write and enforce and collect all that money and simply borrow the full budget each year?

If you can shoo that idea down, please have at it.

Th gov't has to estimate its spending better. Raise the debt ceiling to cover what you authorized, then do a better job of budgeting for the next year so you won't go into debt and have to borrow more to pay for it (raise the debt ceiling). Pay as you go doesn't work well for a large org, business or gov't.
