Dad wants a new AR, something other than a 5.56.

I have a 5.45x39 AR it works just as good as my .223 ARs & at about .11 cents per round (or less) you can't go wrong.

Here is a place that has the cheap surplus ammo & uppers for sale.
    5.45x39 Ammunition
Look to the bottom of the page for the uppers.

I started out on my are quest with a rra 5.56 and now have my armalite .308 - very happy with my decision on caliber and wish I started with a .308 would have saved $ - check them out your dad will be extremely proud of the gun and you:rockwoot:

I would have to go with one in 308, i know its not as fancy as some of the other calibers. But seems to have a alot of options as far as ammo choices and not as expensive as some of the other ammo choices.

The whole reason for the build is that we have a 5.56 stripped lower at home, and he wants an upper for it. So .308 is out, otherwise that would have been the first option.

Ah I got ya. In that case i would totally go 300BLK!

The only thing making me hesitant on the 300blk is that if I/my dad has one, I want it to be an SBR, and I doubt Ill talk him into SBRing the lower, even though he is a trustee for my trust so it would be easy.

I did talk to him yesterday, and he seems like he's really wanting something A) not many people have, and B) He can deer hunt with. I think its gonna be between the .450 Bushmaster or .458 SOCOM. He's wanted a .450 BM since the first time he saw it in Cabelas, and a guy at a gun show last year showed us the .458 for the first time. Ammo price is really turning me off of the .458 though.

I went with a 6.8 spc in an SBR. Great round, but a little pricey, but so are some of the others mentioned. I hear it's a good deer round too.

If not the .300 blackout... the .458 is a sick round, but if I could get an AR in .50 bmg what other choice is there to make?
