Perception is often very different than reality. For example, many folks think that violent crime is MUCH worse today than in previous years/decades. However, violent crime is actually WAY down:
Dark green is the % folks that think there is more crime. Light green is actual rate.

But since the trend was upward from 2010-2012, I'm curious as to whether the upward trend has continued through 2015.

The 24/7 Media meat grinder might be the reason for the misconception. In your face all the time.

Crime has become more violent or so it seems.

Latest FBI data is 2013 (I think).
Even more telling visual, without the "how I feel" aspect:

Wish I could find some data on how often the "news" reports on violent crime.

The media tends to sensationalize these reports which makes them seem worse.
Plus it is on a loop.

Actual crime stats. NOTE: The FBI didn't track kidnapping cases until the mid-90's. Hard to go back farther.

    Two take-aways for me:
    1) talking about it drives the number down
    2) We are safer today than we ever have been

Great info. It just feel like things are getting 'better' or 'safer'. As others have mentioned, I am sure the feeling of a more dangerous environment has a lot to do with the multiple 24 hour news stations reporting every issue.

thanks for all of the good info.

    Manson? Dahmer? Bundy? Gacy? Wuornos?

There are some sick and twisted folks out there. Then and now.
Ed gein, Elizabeth bathory, marquis de Sade, vlad the impaler, etc.

as mentioned before, they've always been out there, but there is worldwide coverage of any event deemed newsworthy that makes things so much more prevalent.

Wow, that's pretty crazy. In this world, it is really a surprise that people would just leave their kid out in the open. I don't know what they lady was thinking. I am glad though that nothing terrible happened to the baby. Some parents need a parenting lesson in parenting....

When my son was young enough to still be in a carrier I was never more than a couple feet away from said carrier when I was out shopping.
    Call me crazy I guess.
