I live in Mi close to the indy border and am a CPL holder. I always have a loaded .38 in my pickup and I get in and out of Indy a couple of times a month.

I understand that Indiana honors Mi CPLs, but I am not sure about things like carrying in a bar and stuff like that.

Are Indiana's CPL laws similar to Michigan's? And danger zones to look out for?

Indiana honors all other permits from all states and countries. Yes, Indiana's laws are similar to Michigan's, but they aren't the same. You should read up on them prior to carrying in Indiana. I recommend starting with the INGO FAQ (linked in my sig), and you can follow up with the actual statutes here:

Bar carry is legal in indiana, unless of course, it is hosting a school function. If a bar is holding a school function, well, that just opens up a new can of worms!

Hey redhawk, where in SW do you live? I'm in Edwardsburg. Sunday the 9th from 1:00 to 4:00, at Westfield park in Portage there will be an open carry picnik. Maybe I'll see you there. Later, Bob

    Mendon.

I heard about the open carry get-togethers and was surprised to learn that the old restrictions on open carry had been set aside.:)

I have some family in Centreville. Portage is a nice place. Go there a couple of times a year myself. Was actually there last weekend. We either eat there or Three Rivers.

I'm confused. You live close to Indianapolis but you have a Michigan CPL??? So you live in Carmel or some other suburb?

Or, do you have dual residences, Michigan and near Indianapolis?

If you live in Indiana, you need to apply for an Indiana LTCH as your Michigan carry license is no longer valid.

EDIT: Are you confusing "Indy", a nickname for Indianapolis, as a nickname for the state of Indiana?

See also the question, "Does Indiana state law define areas where it is illegal to carry a handgun even with a permit," in the ISP Firearms faq.

    http://www.in.gov/isp/files/firearms_FAQ_02_08.pdf

BTW, how, exactly does your Michigan licence read? What I mean is, the Indiana license is a "License to Carry Handgun," (often referred to as a LTCH, in this forum), while the Utah non-resident license is a "Concealed Firearm Permit." What's the title on your Michigan license?

Michigan's permit reads: Concealed Pistol License.
That is what it says, but handgun maybe carried either open or concealed. In MI, a MI resident over 18 with a lawfully registered handgun may open carry without a permit of any kind. Later, Bob

Yes, you can carry in Indiana using your Michigan carry license. Yes, you can CC with it or OC with it. You can carry anywhere in Indiana except schools, federal buildings, past the metal detectors inside the airport, and casinos.
No problem carrying in bars, cars, places with liquor licenses, or zoos.
Welcome to INGO by the way. I'm just a little way south of you, but I've been CCing in your neck of the woods pretty often lately.

You can carry here just abide by the laws. The easiest way to do that is read up prior to coming here to avoid trouble. My take a few minutes but will be worth it.
