Looking for new bolt action coyote riffle. I have an AR in 223 but isn't doing what i need in the long range. Was considering .243 or 22-250. Both give me a little more punch at the longer distance. Thoughts? Pro's/Con's. Interested in what some others are using and have found with each.
If lethality at long range is the goal, I would go with the 243. It will stay supersonic for longer while holding onto its energy for longer than the 223 or 22-250.
I have looked at the HOWA 1500 and like it but have always like Remmington 700's. Not really sure but would like to get it before this summer so i can practice before next years season
I am not sure i will buy a different flash suppresor with legislation in motion for suppressors being legal for hunting. IF that passes I might spend some $$ on a suppressor for the Black gun and it will definetely stay as my #1 go to. The yotes won't hear the shots...
How far away are you shooting coyotes that your 16 inch AR isn't enough? Either you're one heck of a good shot, or Indiana coyotes are wicked tough compared to Colorado ones.
well if ya wanted something different i would try a 260 Remington, or 6.5 creedmore but hookeye is correct 243 is probably ideal, but 204 Ruger, 22-250 or even 270 would be just fine. don't use a mosin with soft point bullets it just tears them to pieces and keeps on going.
The 22-250 is a sweet varmint cartridge but most of them have barrel twists compatable with lighter bullets. The 70 to 85 grain bullets in a .243 will have more down range energy. I spend a lot more time with various 6.5mm rounds, but I spent enough time with a .243 I bought and a .243 match rifle I built to have good confidence with that cartridge. That would be my choice for coyotes at a distance.
I have a 16" AR, a Savage 22-250, and a Ruger M77 in .243. When heading out for yotes I opt for the AR every time now. Leave the bolt guns at home. I have missed taking doubles because of having to row the bolt and ended up shooting behind the animal as it ran away. I know I could have made a faster shot and killed both if I had the AR. What grain bullet are you shooting in the AR. Go to something heavier if you are having problems at distance.
I have a CZ 527 Ultralight Predator in .223, but i thought it was turning the coyotes away so i got a Savage Model 10 Predator in 243 Winchester. If I ever see a coyote its dead.
