If running out of soap and having to make more were my greatest concern in life.....There would be no more stress and I would likely live a LOT longer. I would be able to enjoy the little things again and be much more appreciative of life, the world, maybe actually enjoy an evening smoke again instead of doing it out of habit or addiction ........Sounds downright tranquil to me. I suspect that is what people like Randy Weaver seek when they drop out of the rat race.

But honestly, would you want to live longer when your life didn't consist of anything but sitting around watching a cow take a crap ?

How awesome would it be to not wake up every day and hear how our politicians keep throwing us under the bus. That alone would be worth it, lol.

I admire people like that. Also, I can't help but think we are just a couple of disasters away from everyone having to live w/o electricity and runnign water.

Ask yourself... how would you live if the electric and water stopped. Right now.

Well, that perhaps may be where your focus would be centered, but I on the other hand would be more likely to watch a bear tear the bark from a stump to get at the ants beneath it, or watch an eagle catch fish from the cold waters of a lake, or keep the deer antelope and rabbits from eating my garden..........or, heck maybe even go WILD and whittle a new spoon or bowl from the knurled piece of wood I cut from the tree that is seasoning to provide heat next winter......Trust me, just because there's no mall or corner bar or crack house down the street, doesn't mean there's nothing to do. In fact to the contrary, there would be plenty MORE to do.

But to answer your question, no, living like that I'd want to die tomorrow......(sarcasm intended for those watching cows crap)

I think I'd enjoy living WHERE they live, but not HOW they live. I'll take a nice 2000 square foot adobe ranch home with a small courtyard, running water and good old electricity. West Texas without the possibility of running water and air conditioning just doesn't appeal to me. I'd likely have a horse, but I ain't swapping a good 4x4 pickup for one.

I think that those who are posting on the internet about how they long for simplicity (and no electricity) are being a bit disingenuous. After all....they are posting on the internet. :): Some people, though they wail and moan about the ills of the world on a daily basis, actually seek out things that they KNOW make them upset, and then gripe about them constantly on the internet. If they really wanted simplicity, they would turn off the computer, turn off the TV, and pay attention to what is important in life.

That's partially the problem with this Country though. As much as I long for simpler times, no internet, etc, we'd be so bad off if we didn't have it. And i'm not saying live without the Internet, etc. You can still have it via Solar/wind/geo power.

ANYWAY, about that being part of the problem. That highlighted part equates to burying one's head in the sand and ignoring the problems around them. Turn off the computer. No more world/Country wide news. Turn off the tv. No local news. What is important in life, to most of us, = God, Family, Country. Those are my top three priorities.

I search out those things that make me upset because they are there. They are what is destroying this Country and is what is going to make living the simple life impossible. Imagine what will happen to that couple in TX when the healthcare bill passes and they can't get the mandatory insurance and they have no way to pay into the system. Opps, off to jail with them.

That's why I try to stay current and allow my blood to boil. It gets me out there to make a change back to Freedom and Liberty and Justice. That's what keeps me from being able to live the simple life.

We had to live withoug electric and water for a month in Florida after a hurricane. This was before we were preppers. We made it, the heat sucked....but we made it. Now...that we have things stock piled, We would be fine. It would be uncomfortable at first....But we would be fine.

Went six days with no power

Went through two hurricanes in one summer in So Florida; first went without power for four days and the second lasted six days. No thanks, you can keep it, all you do is exist waiting for the juice to come on. I much rather have the creature comforts.

<Opinion snip> I respect that. Everyone has their own outlook on life.

Let's be real. Liberals/socialists are like herpes. You can't get rid of them, and they keep flaring up. They know that the American electorate is fickle...damn near bi-polar. If they **** off America, they'll be voted out of office. And when the economy makes a bit of a nosedive in its natural ebb and flow, America will blame the party in power and vote for the other guys again. Lather, rinse, repeat. It's not very often that the party opposite of the sitting President doesn't gain seats in Congress in off-year elections. It happens over and over. Unfortunately, today's politicians are NOTHING like those of the past. We'll get to this in a moment.

There will never be a time when we go "back to freedom, liberty and justice," because such a time never existed. It very much did exist. I'm not a Libertarian so I have no idea what this fantasy looks like. That said, Yes, there was a time when you were free and liberty and justice rang true. It was just hard work. Something no one these days cares for. You are kidding yourself if you think that this nation every resembled the libertarian fantasy that lots of people think it was. Back in the "good old days," how much liberty and justice was there for black people? I guess women didn't deserve the blessings of our nation, either, since they were considered too stupid to vote. Stupid things from our past that we overcame. But even though these groups were restricted, it was still a free Country where a man could start a business without fear of government doing this and that to you before you even open your doors. Many restrictions today were non-existent back then. Gun laws regarding carrying were more restrictive in the 1830s than they are today. Really? How so? examples? I wasn't aware most of America in the 1830's on restricted carry. :dunno: Only recently has a large majority of the US allowed the carry of concealed weapons. So American's don't have a tradition of carrying firearms? As far as I know, American's had been carrying firearms with little if any restriction until the early 1900's Police are much more restricted today than they've ever been. Back in the 40's and 50's, if a cop kicked your a$$, it was generally understood that you probably deserved it. There was none of this "read me my rights" stuff. Before Tennessee v. Garner, a cop could shoot you in the back if you were a fleeing felon, even if you were unarmed. Today, people scream "JACKBOOT!" if they get pulled over for speeding, and often times a cop can only shrug his/her shoulders in the face of crime due to inept prosecutors who are only concerned with their convictions rates and re-election, rather than actually trying a case. Because people saw the corruption coming from state and local governments and finally started holding them to their oath's and the Constitution. You speak like all this has been a bad thing? If a cop kicked your arse in the 30's and 40's, it didn't make it right then, just as it doesn't now. Back then they didn't have such open lines of communication so corruption could breed like jackrabbits and no one would know outside the region. Or town in some cases. Now we have the internet and cable tv and can hold our elected officials to their word and try to stop corruption before it starts. Unfortunately, American's have accepted levels of corruption as the norm and feel they can't change it so they don't try. If only the American People would hold their elected officials and other officials accountable we could stop corruption altogether. It's just a shame everyone's too lazy to do it.

The country is not being destroyed. It changes, just like everything else in this world, sometimes for the worse, sometimes for the better. If we survived a civil war, 2 world wars, assassinations, civil rights struggles, civil unrest, economic recession and depression, terrorist attacks, and the inexplicable popularity of Michael Bolton....I'm quite sure the republic will survive a milquetoast latter-day Jimmy Carter, whose best talent seems to be bowing to other heads of state and talking smack about Fox News.

I'm sorry, but if you don't think this Country isn't being destroyed and isn't crumbling, you're not paying attention. Sure, we can survive an idiot in office. But can we survive the collective idiots in office who are driving this Country into the ground, weakening our defenses, and making it easier for Terrorists to enter the Country? I'm not so sure.

But seriously, if you don't think this Country is being destroyed, wake up and smell the bull:poop: before it's too late.

    Sorry for the thread jack.

The reason I started this thread was to find out how many folks were wanting to survive and how many were only willing to spend a week in a cabin. As I expected, most aren't really willing to SURVIVE. Someone like me would have a better mindset as I'm two generations closer to that livestyle than you. The bad thing is that I don't have the strength and stamina I had 15 years ago.

If the huge disruption happens there won't be any property taxes. No grocery stores, gas stations, utility bills TV etc. That's when you find out who wants to survive and actually build a future and who will waste away.

Like I remember from a Eastwood movie, "A mans got to know his limitations".
