And although I'm on record from WAY back as being in the "couldn't" camp, I'll ding you on "proofread" being a compound word.

Fun thread, though.
If I were a grammar Nazi I'd be the busiest guy on the web. No time for all of that. If people want to come across as stupid because they don't know how to use the English language, that's their business. I make mistakes too but at least attempt to use the language properly, proof read a post or use spellcheck correctly.
I'm simply pointing out the most commonly misused phrase in the United States.
The funny thing is everyone who is mocking this thread is more than likely in the "could" crowd, though they would certainly never admit it.
Continue flaming if it makes you feel better, but the truth does hurt.

That is all.
I really could care less, but I don't care enough to care any less because I just don't really care.
Pffft. Amateur.
I'm not impressed until you start pointing out comma splices, split infinitives, and dangling participles, and you can diagram a complex compound sentence after defining it.
So does using vulgarities, yet highly educated people do it all the time.Yes, but even if you've got a slew of PHD's or MBA's it makes you sound like an uneducated schmuck.
Carry on...
