If I were a grammar Nazi I'd be the busiest guy on the web. No time for all of that. If people want to come across as stupid because they don't know how to use the English language, that's their business. I make mistakes too but at least attempt to use the language properly, proof read a post or use spellcheck correctly.

I'm simply pointing out the most commonly misused phrase in the United States.

The funny thing is everyone who is mocking this thread is more than likely in the "could" crowd, though they would certainly never admit it.

Continue flaming if it makes you feel better, but the truth does hurt. :)

It's right up there with "You can't have your cake and eat it too" (also wrong!). ;)
And although I'm on record from WAY back as being in the "couldn't" camp, I'll ding you on "proofread" being a compound word. :D
    Fun thread, though.

Confirmed. I just checked the records and she is, indeed, camping at the aforementioned location.

    Pffft. Amateur.

I'm not impressed until you start pointing out comma splices, split infinitives, and dangling participles, and you can diagram a complex compound sentence after defining it.

Is this related to "wash" and "warsh"?

Why do people say "data" with a short "a"?

    Is it "ketchup" or "catsup"?

    Potayto or potahto?

    And another one:

    1. /kærɨˈbiːən/ (ka-rih-BEE-uhn)
    2. /kəˈrɪbiən/ (kuh-RIB-ee-uhn)

While we're at it, why do we park in a driveway but drive in a parkway?

Uh... Could we leave people's "dangling participles' out of this conversation? :D
